    - Compact and portable design
    - Weights merely 0.35oz
    - No Cables or Clumsy Cradle required
    - Works with Both Mac and PC for both data transfer and charging
    - Charges your shuffle via any powered USB ports, USB power supplies, and USB power packs
    - Can be attached onto small keychains or straps
    - Compatible with 2nd generation iPod shuffle

The 3.5mm to USB Adaptor allows you to easily connect a 2nd Gen iPod Shuffle to any USB port without having to use the relatively large iPod Shuffle Dock (included with your iPod Shuffle). Supporting full speed USB transfer rates, you will be amazed at how quickly it handles music transfer with iTunes and charging needs. The usb shuffle charger is the perfect travel companion, taking up virtually no space in a bag or pocket. No need to haul around the Dock and cables that came with your iPod Shuffle, just pack the usb shuffle data and charger adaptor and you are all set.

Brilliant! Someone stood on my cradle ( not one of Apple's better designs ) breaking the jack and I was looking for a cheap replacement. This is a more robust option.

How on earth can you charge and transfer data via a 3.5" jack? That's crazy!

Short answer: Same way the cradle does.
Medium answer: Look at the photo, its a 4 contact 3.5".
Long answer: From the USB Specification, four pins are used, 2 are for power ( +5v & Ground) and the other 2 are for data ( its serial ). Type 'A' connectors (ones on the back of computers ) the outside pins carry power, inside ones data.
