Faulty Lens - advice needed

    Hey folks,

My lovely 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens is faulty. It won't focus correctly. I think I can hear a little grinding of sand/dirt inside the mechanism. I gather it's just dust/dirt gathered in the sandy environment of Utah.

Now the lens is 3 years old now, so outside warranty.

So, should I just contact Canon UK Service centre and ship to them, or what would you recommend?

    Thanks.

    Sand is the enemy!
I'd go for the best, if the lens means anything to you.

+1, unless it's cheaper to get a new one

I had the same problem before with a lens that was fully extended in AF mode and somebody pushed the front in to the body it never focused after that and I,ve had sand in my lens same crunching noise but focused ok, but yea a 24-70 2.8L send back to canon unless theres a good place here to sort it out.

    Kinda knew already.

I'll be phoning Canon UK Service centre tomorrow, and shipping the lens to them. I'd say they just need to open it and clean inside to remove the sand/dirt.

Can't see it being too expensive (compared to the actual cost of the lens itself). Now, I must check if my insurance policy will cover the repair costs.

Maybe try DML.ie first, they replaced the focussing motor in a friends 70-200 f2.8 and emptyed a load of sand out of it too... ?
