I am goin to UCC next year (touch wood) and 1st orientation week kinda clashes with a holiday. Whats the story with it? Is there set days for each course to go in? Or is it optional when you go in? The site just says it involves a one day comitment from each student, nothing more.

Usually its either one full day, or one day and then you have to come in another to register. You are given the dates to come in, but there are usually campus tours and library tours every day

Tbh I'd say you should go
A lot of it is pointless, listenening to talks from people, but you also find out where all your lectures are on, how to use the library etc

It's also a good chance to get to meet people from your course, important if you're going to be in a big class - arts/law/commerce/biochem etc

All that said, I don't think it would be the end of the world if you miss it. It will make your first few days in college a bit harder though. And it might be a bit of a mess if you miss registration as you wont have a student card etc so I dont know really

What course you hoping to do?

Little bit of a thread ressurection here but what harm. It seemed like this thread was relevant enough not to start a new one.
I'm in first year at the moment, and never went on the library tour at orientation. I've been in the building a couple of times looking for a quiet place to study but the idea of trying to find a book to take out is pretty daunting. Can anyone give me a quick run down of what the system in there is?

I'm sure there's a "how to" guide on the library website. It's pretty easy to find somewhere to study in there but that might change now due to the fact that the end of year exams are coming up.

The librarians can actually be pretty helpful too, even if they look like they would kill you if you went near them sometimes, so don't worry, and there will be a lot of people in the same boat as you, some people take until final year before understanding how the library works

What time does the orientation day finish up, roughly? I'll probably have to leave early.
