question about motor tax

    Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is an extra charge on the motor tax if it's payed late?

It says something here about arrears monthly
    https://www.motortax.ie/mtoapp/pdf/motortax_rates_2008_en.pdf
I don't really know what that is for though.

Also, on my renewal form it says that I can only use that form to pay before the first of April. Does that mean the price changes if I don't pay before that?

I won't be in a position to pay it until the 3rd of April and I don't plan on driving much, so I'm not worried about the gardaí or anything. I thought I could just pay it on the 3rd and that it would automatically be back dated to the day it was due, but now I'm a bit worried about getting stuck paying an additional charge.

Also, I plan on paying online. So will my PIN work after the 31st of March?

    Any help would be appreciated!

Arrears are charged on a monthly basis and are more expensive than the annual fee divided by 12 if you follow me. There are no other penalties for paying late.
Motortax.ie will let you pay your arrears!

So what you're saying is if I pay on the 3rd it will work out more expensive than if I pay on the 31st?
I suppose I'll have to try and avoid that and find a way to pay sooner!
    Thanks.

Yes because if you pay after the month has ended then it counts as arrears.

Sorry to hijack this thread but my 5 week old 04 megane has been declared a write-off after a drunk driver crashed into it on monday, I only taxed it three weeks ago, does anybody here know the proceedure for claiming back the unused tax before I get a new car.

Have a look at that link, looks like you can get a refund once you meet the criteria

Each month in arrears is charges at 10% of the annual rate.

If you were 'not using the car' during the month in question you could declare off the road for that month. ;) Just be sure that you got no parking tickets or speeding tickets during that month - which you couldn't have as the car was off the road, right?

You cannot use the online tax system after the month of renewal has passed.

Yes you can - I have done it several times, without the need to contact Shannon!
