Welcome to boards. The peeps in Motors should be able to help you, or direct you to a good garage. Where are you located? Did you replace filter?

You might have a slipped liner in the block. If so, it's terminal in effect as a full rebuild can't be avoided. If it's bad enough to steam out the rocker cover breather, you'll have blown the head gasket already, and I'd say your oil will be shot too. That's not some internet doom and gloom hype - It's a VERY common fault on the early 'bigger' Rover V8's.... 3.9's through to 4.6's.

Depending on what you want to do with the RRC, you'd be best to stop using it immediately and consult a Rover V8 specialist for their advice. The RV8 will take a shedload of abuse, but you might be able to get away with a short block rebuild if you don't try using it now when it's on its last legs. What part of the world are you in, and I'll try to point you to someone local who can advise you best on your next move....

rover v8's are plentiful in the uk id might be cheapest to think about sourcing a new engine or rusty sd1 etc

Rover V8's are plentiful, but they're not just a straigh swap for the 3.9 in a Range Rover. The RRC would be an automatic, probably a ZF box I guess, but certainly a very different thing to what you'd get in something like an SD1. Not worth the hassle really of mucking about, or in the OP's case I'd guess, paying someone else to muck about with it.

Same thing goes for buying another 3.9 EFI engine from a scrapped RRC, or any other LR etc. They could all be a ticking time-bomb, waiting for the same thing to happen again. Better options would be to get a retro-engineered V8 built with top hat liners, or possibly look to do a 200TDi transplant if the Rangey is in great condition....

Apart from that, it simply might not make sense to spend the money on her....
