    What is happening?
Is the Sky box well ventillated?

The SkyHD box has known issues with faulty capacitors on the power supply , I replaced one myself not so long ago , if you want if fixed permanently you should buy a properly refurbed power supply ( with known good capacitors ...about 50 euro ) , there is a thread on this here ,

Sky will just replace the box with another , and the issue will still be there , of course if your still under warranty then it costs you nothing , but if your out of warranty and are paying for the callout , then it makes sense to get a properly fixed supply.

Mine just seems to knock itself off a lot lately!! Takes about 90 seconds for it to come back on then. Very annoying.

Turning off the "instant rewind" option can help with this

I've had similar problems with them mostly ranging from power supply problems. Also had a few that wont respond to remote control or if they do they are extremely sluggish even if new batteries are placed in them

In my opinion the HD boxes aren't worth the hype as there just isn't enough to justify the extra €15 sub a month despite the fact there is currently a few new HD channels under test sequence

Hardly relevant here , if the OP didnt want HD he wouldnt have got it , whether or not the box is worth it is an entirely different thread if you care to start one , though its already been done to death!!

    Back on topic !

The Thomson boxes have QC issues , mostly in relation to the power supply , if your box is out of warranty , replacing that will most likely fix your problems.
The box turning on and off randomly would be a power supply issue as well although that did not show up in my case , however as all the caps on the standard power supply are prone to failure the symptoms would depend on which ones have started to leak , so this is most likely down to the same issue.

Incidentally , on replacing the power supply , a few other things have caught my eye , like before , there was a blanking issue on changing channels , screen would go black for a second or so , likewise with the HD channels but there could be a blackout of 10 seconds or more , additionally , the screen justification would always jump back to default wide on changing between HD and SD channels , all of these issues are gone now , but I always thought they were a function of the TV and never attributed them to the HD box , but it now seems that the power supply change has fixed all of these issues !
So , if your HD box is giving trouble , change the power supply , it seems to be the root of 90% of problems with the Thomson box.

I got sky on around mid December so 4 boxes in 4 months!! Still under warranty but like doesn't say alot for the quality of the boxes. All sky seem to be doing is "fixing" the boxes and pawning them off as refurbished models which work for about a month and then break again.

My problem with all the boxes has been no signal in input 2 and therefore can't record and watch another channel. Tried switching the cables and still the same problem.

Rang sky and they said it can't be the box 3 times in a row and to get the dish and lnb replaced and the engineer basically said the Thomson boxes are sh1te and my satellite and lnb are fine and to demand a new pace box cos they are better. However, sky don't issue new boxes as replacements so he just gave me another replacement.

If this one breaks i'll probably cancel even if the Hd is amazing and i'll be waiting another 10 years for UPC to offer HD :D

    rant over! :p

Have you considered getting a third party box and dragon cam?
