A problem has been detected and windows has ben shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If this is the first time you've seen this error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacture
for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable BIOS memory options such as caching or
shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer , press f8 to select advanced start up options, and then select safe mode.
    Technical information:
    Stop:0x000000ED (0x86747030, 0xc0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Restarted pc but same thing happened and no new hardware or software had been installed. I'm only an average pc user so don't understand all bios memory or safe mode. Evereytime I start up it's the same and just won't move on. Any suggestios would be much appreciated. By the way I'm doing this on another pc.

Insert windows cd and boot from it. When setup loads choose the 'Recovery Console' option. When Recovery Console loads type chkdsk /r and hit return. Let the scan run to completion and restart. It can sometimes take 1 - 2 hours depending on the size of your HD.

That should recover it but on the odd occasion that error means a borked harddrive.

If I do that, will I loose all my photos etc. that I haven't backed up?

No. It only repairs system files and the registry. Your personal files will be safe.

    Slap in your Windows disc.

Press R for Recovery when blue screen is loaded

Press 1 to choose your operating system.

When it asks you for Administrator password just press enter (presuming you didn't put a password on the account.)

Type fixboot, press enter and type yes to the question.

    That'll fix the unmountable_boot_device error.

    (OPITIONAL)
Type chkdsk /r then to repair any errors

Badda bing, badda boom, you're back in business!
