right ive read almost everything in the faq. and am looking to buy a Nikon 85mm f/1.8 F1.8 D AF Lens or the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 f1.8 D AF Lens. for close up shots and the like .

however i do like to take photos of motorsports and i usually cant get very near the cars due to barriours and the like. what type of lens would people recomend for this ?

The 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is generally a good all-round sports lens. It has a decent reach, is fast and is reliable.

    Well worth checking out.

    Welcome to boards photography.

If you've got the money then a nice Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8. If you're cheap like me then a Sigma 70-300 APO. Its slow (f4-5.6) but unbeatably cheap and cheerful.

    edit: snap!

How much are you looking to get for it?

This one is currently at £400 (also from NI, actually):

Mine is identical, has everything with it, immaculate as-new condition.

Close up. Do you mean macro? If so would a dedicated macro lense not be preferable. Nikon 60mm f/2.8 or something similar. Im pretty sure Sigma do a 50mm f/1.8 that can do relatively close focusing also.

If you can't get inside the barriers you are probably wasting your time. Most of the meshes are too small to fit a lense through. Bearing this in mind, a large aperature lense may help by having the mesh very OOF. No promises though. The Nikon 80-200 2.8 is a little bit cheaper than the sigma 70-200 2.8. The Nikon 70-200 2.8 is about twice the price.

    What motorsports do you shoot?

There is a hill climb in Co. Wexford this weekend if you are interested. The d80 kit lense should have more than enough range to deal with this (I hope).
