Overloaded router??

We have a wireless network for allowing Internet access at work. Yesterday I finally secured the thing, added another pc (bringing it up to 8 pcs) and connected a skype wifi phone (connects directly to the network without a pc). It was then time to go home but everything seemed to be ok.

This morning the Internet has slowed to a crawl and the pcs keep dropping their connection to the network.

I reckon two things have happened,

    1. We've gone over our limit for the month 3mb digiweb connection. I've contacted them but their "system" is down so I have to wait for them to get back to me.

    2. The little belkin adsl router (which has been working perfectly up to today) just can't handle 8pcs and the phone. We don't use the adsl feature of the router that's a separate box.

Could it be that the routers overloaded?

Either way I think I might upgrade the router to something more robust and secure, but is it really necessary? Any recomendations?

Edit. Disconnected two of the pcs and everythings working again. New router I guess.

In theory, the router should be able to support just over 250 devices! I have six devices on my Internet gateway. Rarely crashes but, then again, usually only four or five devices in use at any time.

I think it's more likely your connection is being throttled. Can only wait and see. I hate Belkin's networking gear but I'd imagine it could cope with eight devices :)

I've been looking around and found someone saying that hardware limits would put max users at around 30 devices on good hardware. The belkin router is old and run constantly maybe it's poor little back is broke.

With less computers on the network there's no speed issues so I can't lay the blame with digiweb.

    Damn this wireless network!

I replaced the Belkin with a Buffalo Airstation WZR-AG300NH It's supposed to be N-draft gigabit access point.

A right pain to get working, it's was dropping clients allot in the beginning but seems to be improving slightly with time. One computer just will not connect to the access point though. It can see the network but can't acquire an IP address, which comes from the digiweb modem rather than the access point which has routing turned off.

I've tried manually setting the IP settings. Reinstalling the card. I've completely ran out of ideas on why this card which seems to be working perfectly will not pick up an IP address.

Other clients have had problems with them dropping their security settings at random times but that seems to have worked itself out??

What could be causing this IP problem?
