    Hi lads,
I have a Marshall AVT100 amp. Its got a headphones slot on the back. I plug in my headphones and sound still comes out of the amp...am I doing something wrong here?

I don't want to chance actually unplugging the speaker from the amp, cuz I've heard that can go wrong...but should it just be a case of you plug in your headphones and the sound comes out of them instead no?

They might have forgotten to wire it up... :D

Yeah, they might have wired it wrong (it would be a switching jack to bypass the amp stage, in any other circuit anyway), or maybe the headphone out is before the master volume so you have to turn the output down to mute the speaker. So as to give you the option of using both or something like that. Does anything come out of the headphone at all?

You'd be right not to unplug the speaker, it would be pretty bad for the amp to be running without a load attached.

yea sound comes out of both - the headphone and the amp

by turning down the master volume on the amp, both the headphones and amp go down...bit weird

Ah. Okay, I guess it was wired wrong, or they just designed it really really badly.

hmm crap.. so who do I go to about this? I bought this amp about 5 years ago in Donegal, and I'm sure its well out of warranty..even if it was still in warranty I aint goin the whole way back up there with it

Suppose marshall support line if there even is one. If I dropped it into a music shop, would it be expensive to get it repaired?

If it's a design flaw then I would say it could be irreparable. Without knowing how it's wired it's impossible to know if there's anything than can be done.

To be honest, I wouldn't really think it worth the expense for an AVT100. Getting one of those headphone guitar amps would be cheaper than the repair.

I have the older VS102r version, the previous generation, and the headphone jack in that switches off the speakers. I'd imagine yours should do the same. Contact marshall and see what the story is. If it was a quality issue I reckon they should still be liable. I mean it hasn't failed, it just wasn't built right!
