The 'name that car' thread gave me a thought that there should be a comprehensive car encyclopedia out there somewhere.

I'm trying to find out about those weird and wonderful maunfacturers that have lons since disappeared. A quick search on Amazon produced a huge array of results all promising the earth but you can never tell.

Anyone know of a specific one to look for?

Wikipedia is really the only encyclopedia so-to-speak that has nearly every car ever made in it.

If you're looking for one in paper form, I doubt there is many that will have the range of cars Wiki does. I had a large encyclopedia that I gave the lend to a friend a while back, and it had a vest array of cars in it. Can't remember what it's called now though.

The problem with printed stuff is that it is out of date before the ink dries.

That said, I'm sure you could get comprehensive guides if you were only interested in the 60s or 70s for example.

I have a series of books called the A-Z of cars, for the 1920's, 1930s 1945-1970, 1970s and 1980s, covers cars sold on the UK market, invaluable.
Have a couple of Observer's book of Automobiles as well, check Ebay.
I also have a large book called Encyclopedia of cars from 1985 or so, covers nearly everything from Daimlers first tricycle to the 1980s

The AtoZ series of books is quite good, i have the 1970s one, the only gripe i would have is that they could have put in more detail about the cars. With the internet there days its much easier to find out obscure facts, though you cant beat a good book in front of the fire!!
