USB input devices on P5K Pro

I know this thread could also be put in the Windows forum but since its a hardware issue I posted it here.

I'm building a machine with an Asus P5K Pro motherboard. The customer wants a USB keyboard and mouse. But it seems this board needs PS/2 devices... if I use USB the OS (Windows XP) takes about a minute longer to boot and reports the following error in the log:

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    i8042prt

Also, the Device Manager shows a phantom PS/2 keyboard and mouse with a Code 24 error. If I disable the i8042prt service it solves the slow startup but the non existent PS/2 devices are still shown in Device Manager, just with a different error code.

Is this something I can fix or will I need to contact Asus about it? I've already tried the latest BIOS.
