I have found a 31 year old car in the UK that I want to buy. I am currently having it checked out by a specialist.

Can someone explain the process for registering the car over here. Do I just go to the VRT office? I have brough in a normal car before and paid the VRT the following day. Just wonering if the process differs for a classic?

    Thanks,
    Randomer

The main difference (as I'm sure you know) is the price - €50 admin fee!

You can also choose between a ZV XXXX style reg or a 77 D XXXX style (Dublin examples). If you're not set on either they should be able to tell what both actual numbers are before you choose.

If you have the logbook, they will just use that for age verification. Otherwise they may go out and have a look at the car and check the chassis/model number. (My experience anyway).

Lastly, I wouldn't stress about having it done the next day. The VRT office won't care if it's a few days (or weeks) later.

What ya bringing in? Pics? :)

Thanks for that. Very useful information there.

I have been trying to phone the VRT people for the last week and just cant ever get through to a real person!

Its a Porsche 911. No pictures yet, but as soon as I get the pics I will post them online for ya.

why have I got a Cortina when I could have a 911 and €48 pa road tax?

I thought motor tax had gone up from €42 to €46? (just check and it's €46)

I register last June, took about 4 weeks to sort. From around June last year you needed a PPS number to register.

PPS number? I did not know that.

I've also just recalled that I think you need cash to pay the €50. For some reason they won't take a cheque or draft. Somebody might confirm this though.

PPS to track "I'm not a professional but this is how I make my money" importers.

I think they take Laser, but only up to €1500 or something like it.

When I cleared the Merc last August at Galway customs, they had a notice saying 50 euro cash max accepted.

If you don't have your PPS they can look it up.
Most places won't take cash now.

Please ensure your get ALL the V5. If they send it to Swansea there will be a long wait while they process it for you.

The VRT boys will process it and then send it to Swansea for them to mark it as exported. You might need to convince your seller of this.

They won't take cash above €50 (ie: for a non classic registration) otherwise bring your chequebook. PPS is needed but that's a new thing and isn't reflected in the forms so you just need to know to have it.
