Just thought i'd share something that happend to me on Saturday while in town, was about 2 o'clock so broad daylight and was standing just off Liffey street in Dublin waiting to use an ATM. As I got to the ATM I noticed this Romanian fella standing just accross the way from it. I get to the ATM and I put in my card, pin and just as i hit the ammount he comes running over and sticks a newspaper straight in front of the screen, he's then joined by another one a girl who came from behind me who does the same, now they weren't trying to sell me papers they were blocking so I couldn't see the money and blocking the hatch where it comes out. I grabbed both their hands and threw them out of the way and quickly grabbed the money away and into my pocket, then the bloke lunges himself forwards shouting at me so I threw him a right hook and he scampered down the lane where the pound world used to be there, just thought i'd share this if anyone had anything similar happen, watch it out there these guy's have no standards, or morals.

This trick has been around a while, I think. Pity you got stung by it though.

Cheers for the heads up, I really gotta give that a try

Don't see the trick really, they just tried to grab your cash. No rocket science involved.

    Really?

At what point did you remove your card, then wait patiently for the money to be dispensed? Since all wall mounted ATMs now have the card first feature.

To be honest I can't remember what point I removed it, it was all happening in a rush I just remember when it started making that beeping noise I knew the money was coming and had to grab it, must have taken card before that..

They wait for you to take the card out and while the machine is "Counting the cash", that's when they come over and try to distract you.

It's not a particulary sophisticated or inventive one is it?? LOL

As demonstrated by our volunteer, Irishcrx, a good puck in the mouth should remedy the situation.

    Good work fella.

They should add a warning sign to ATM's "Warning - Approaching someone while this machine is in use may result in serious bodily harm"

Old trick but seems to work well as they still use it.
Btw, they are Roma not Romanian. That is if you mean the gipsys?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Irishcrx

To be honest thinking about it afterwards I ndon't think your man had any intention of getting away I think the girl would have taken it and ran and your man take the beating, he looked like he'd been through the wars already...But you never know some people wouldn't say anything back and they'd walk off 300-400 euro richer.

Well the gyppos would hardly try rob him before the money came out?

    Romanian Roma don't exist then?

    Hardly new.

It's like not like this is a sophisticated con or anything. While I'm waiting for my cash at an ATM people could burst into flames around me and they're not going to get my attention until my money is in my hand.

It's easy enough to shove your back into someone who is trying to block your view. You should always stand close into the machine anyway so they don't have easy access.

Something similar happened to me. I was at at atm with my mom getting my money out and I saw these two guys who were up to no good behind me. I thought nothing much of it, people are always standing about. But when I put my pin in they started making trouble and my mom got scared and said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'. I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I can say this cab is rare, But I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air'.

Carry a small can of pepper spray and have it ready when taking cash out at an ATM.

I would have given him a boot while he was on the ground too

its unusual that they'd try it on a guy. altho u did point out that the girl woulda taken the cash and run while the guy stood and took a box or two. I've heard of this happening to 3 friends, all female so I just assumed they avoided trying it on guys for fear of repercussions in the form of an elbow to the face, but obviously they are getting bolder... f*ckers!!!!

I thought this too, until i used an AIB one on saturday night and the money came out first then the card, took me well offguard!

    Unimaginative.

If I did floor him it would be a flat sole of the nike to the face, then relieve him of any cash, mobile phones and trainers he was wearing. A form of compensation for the trauma :)

tbh it would be pretty cool to profit from an attempted mugging.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Irishcrx

Well to be honest I wasn't going to hit the girl no matter how much she might have deserved it and when I hit him he went down and I was too busy looking around for the ****er that would be behind me if you know what I mean and he got the point and was scampering away seconds later then, they are cheeky ****ers cause they also saw that I was with 3 other lads who were only standing 10 feet away and still went for it , they must be getting desperate , broadlight with people queing watching at the ATM.
