Girlfriend was using her computer, not sure what she downloaded etc, but now cant connect to the internet. the modem has all signs ok, dsl lights etc, dont have another computer in the house to double check tho. she has McAfee internet security which normally picks it up. that know detects a problem with 'computer files' and 'firewall' but cant fix it, or find anything in the search.

It wont let me try a system restore or anything like that, loads fine, i click a date to restore but clicking next does nothing. I have also tried in safe mode but no joy. i know it must be a virus of some type but not sure what way to go about it? If i transferred files to an external drive and reinstall windows would it work, or still have the virus. Never had a problem like this, so new to this type of thing

    thanks

Try restarting the computer and unplugging the modem at the same time.

Its not necessarily a virus, very few computer issues are.

Can you post screen shots, or give us the entire, exact text of the McAfee errors?

it tries to fix them, but with both of them if cant, cant remember the exact line it uses, but i will check soon. It has red flags in the 'firewall' and 'computer files'

Download a program called HijackThis from :
    http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html

Once you run a scan with it, it will create a logfile. If you can copy that log into your post, I'll have a look at it and should be able to tell you quickly enough if there's something nasty on there.

when i click fix it, new window appears loading back and forth trying to fix and then just disappears without giving a error and both warning remain the same. it did give a warning once before something like because of the two of them it couldn't fix it

Can you get online via Safe Mode With Networking ?

You will need to transfer this over via a USB key or something so we can rule out whether malware is involved

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

I've PM'ed you with the results from the Hijack Log Davton. This is where your problem lies:

O23 - Service: Microsoft security update service (msupdate) - Unknown owner - c:\windows\system32\mssrv32.exe

According to HijackThis, you seem to have a Trojan on your system. This trojan is a variant of Trojan.Win32.Agent.NCR. I've sent you a link for a removal tool in the PM. Let me know how you get on.

is it advisable to be running both Norton and McAfee simultaneously?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,970 ✭✭✭ActorSeeksJob

DarkJager what tool did you PM him with ? There is a lot more infections than that one entry you reported, I would be careful posting instructions to users if you don't know what you are doing

davton, you have Norton and McAfee running. You need to remove one of these.

So either download and run the Norton Removal Tool from here

    http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

    Or the McAfee Removal Tool

    http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/displaydoc.asp?frames=1&docid=408302&CategoryId=107187

Once you have done that reboot and do the following

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    2. Close any open browsers.
    3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

      • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
      • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      • Close any open browsers.
      • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
      • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
      • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

I didn't have both Norton and mcafee on it, just loaded Norton on the other day to use a recovery disc.
DarkJager what tool did you PM him with ?

told me to use spybot on it, haven't tried it yet.

just to add the error from 'repairing' Internet connect gives a TCP/IP error

Please keep all troubleshooting in thread from now on.

I wouldn't waste your time using Spybot, it won't do anything against the infections you have

    Run ComboFix.exe there
