Down is a strongish hurling county. Although not good enough to compete at All Ireland level they can field 2 competitive teams in the lower end of the league. They are probably doing it so more people can get a game. I wonder if they will put South Down in the Nicky Rackard cup.

The whole South Down thing makes no sense to me. The Nickey Rackard is absolutely shocking - how anyone would aspire to playing in it is beyond me. As a single team, Down wouldn't be too far behind Leinster's second stream, e.g. Wicklow, Carlow, Westmeath, Kildare. They'd be better off concentrating on the Christy Ring

Think it's to do with the area up around the Ards Peninsula being the hurling stronghold in Down.

This way it gives the other few clubs a chance to get on a county team. It's like a developmental squad.
