G.I. Joe

I used to love G.I. Joe (or Action Force as they were called here) when I was a kid so I was interested to see that they are making a movie based on the comic/cartoon/toy franchise.

Unfortunately it will directed by Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Van Helsing) and has some questionable casting but at the very least it will have some nostalgic value.

Here is a picture of Ray Park as Snake Eyes.

see my post on the a-team thread for my reaction. The same rules apply. Do it the right way, or we'll end up with another Starsky and Hutch type fiasco.

    How very cool.

I had the snake eyes figure (was a G.I. Joe figure, not Action Man) when I was a kid, by far the coolest of the figures I had.

Sorry I meant to say Action Force (which G.I. Joe was called in the UK) and not Action Man.

I agree though, Snake Eyes was probably the best action figure, he had the coolest weapons and even had a pet wolf :D

Here is a pic from the comic and another pic from the movie (looks very good I have to say).

It must have something going for it to have such a good cast signing on.

It falls within the same bracket as Transformers (guaranteed audience of both kids and the 80s-nostalgia-brigade). Could easily be a case of needing/wanting a big wad of cash no matter how bad the film is, although the fact that Snake Eyes has been kept almost identical to his appearance in the comics suggests that those involved in making this are trying to avoid fanboy wrath after seeing the reaction to Michael Bay's "updating" of the Transformers cast...

Some wrath. The movie is one of the top 20 grossing films ever..

G.I. Joe could be really good if done well, or if not done well it could end up being Village People: the movie. Snake Eyes looks cool, of course he was always the cool one.

i was a big G.I. Joe fan back in the day. I think the casting looks pretty good some actors there that you'd think would only be on board if the script was good so here's hoping! I'm not too sure about the kid from 3rd rock from the sun being cobra commander though.
Any my favorite was always Tunnel Rat :) Hope they have Road Pig in it too.

Which goes to show that fanboys griping while still forking out good money to watch a film in the cinema (And then own the limited edition of the DVD/Blu-Ray version, and buying the toys, etc etc) will get ignored :D

At the same time, I suppose positive fanboy reaction at this stage of the production will help to build up a promotional buzz, given that G.I. Joe's central concept isn't as easy a sell as that of Transformers.

I'm really looking forward to this, so far indications are good. Summers may not be a Kurosawa but he has proven time after time that he knows how to deliver an entertaining film. Deep Rising, the Mummy films and even Van Helsing were all entertaining and great throwbacks to the saturday matinee films of yesterday. Hopefully after G.I. Joe Summers will finially get his Flash Gordon film off the ground.

Yep, rubbish bit of casting there, at least his face will be always covered and hopefully his voice will be dubbed :p

I reckon they will try to spawn a few sequels out of this movie because they are leaving out main characters like Serpentor, Mr. Mindbender & the Crimson Twins (Tomax & Xamot). I just hope that they don't hold back for a PG rating but they probably will.

If it doesn't have something resembling the following video, I'll declare this a fail.

It's funny... everyone is striking sh*t hot poses and Sienna Miller just looks incredibly awkward.

Do you honestly think you'd be comfortable wearing that? :D

You've never met me, have you?

Baroness kicks ass though... I can't see Ms. Miller doing her justice.

    Great editing in this clip:

    jesus lads...sounds like a disaster.

i'd say even with the shudder-inducing cast list...it will be more enjoyable than most retro reincarnations....
because they won't need much cgi bull****.

a bucket of blue paint for zartan i say!!

i am looking forward to it though.
stormshadow zartan and sgt.slammer/slaughter were my faves.

there was also some feen in a brown t shirt with shaved head and beige rocket launcher that i loved.

    its quite simple

If the opening of the new movie cannot outdo this, then there is no hope:

I just saw an advert on the net for this last night. The trailer looks good, it's not going to be a critical darling but it may make a good popcorn movie. There's plenty of action and plenty of eye candy for the lads.

One of the things that seems a little strange to me are the uniforms. The cartoon series had each GI Joe character wearing their own outfit/uniform which reflected their own personality in a way. In the movie, they're all wearing the same thing. I guess that's more miltary-like but doesn't seem to reflect their individual personalities though they may make up for that with more character development. Anyhoo, I'm still excited to see it this August.
