    How much do you plan on spending?

    Hi Fajitas, probably up to around 200 euros ish on the present as a whole, not sure if the tripod will be some or all of it... Have literally no idea what the decent ones cost... maybe that wont even look at it?

    Hmmm, right;

    http://www.connscameras.ie/flat_areaEQLproductsAMPCategoryIDEQL5_entry.html

    That's a list of tripods you can buy in Conn's in Dublin (Not sure where you're from)

    You can pretty much spend anything from 20 quid to 500 quid on a tripod, it'd be worth your while finding out how much you reckon they'll use it!

    Also, bear in mind the more expensive ones don't come with a head, you'll have to buy that seperatly... just in case you settle on a 160 quid tripod and find you have to spend another 60 quid for the head!!!

    It'd be worth your while popping into a camera shop or two yourself (if the person you're buying for knows they're getting a tripod, bring'em along), but at the end of the day, find out how much they'll use it!

    I got a manfrotto 055xprob legs and a 804rcs head at the camera centre for €179.00 a €100.00 saving on conns. Probably priced wrong but hey. May be worth looking at.

    You also need to think about how it will be used ...

    For example ... if the person using it is likely to be hiking up a mountain then a Manfrotto 055 or 190PROB and head is not a good solution ... I know this from personal experience since I own the 190PROB and joystick head ... which is why I eventually shelled out considerably more for a Gitzo Mountaineer with Acratech GZ ball head ... costing considerably more money than the Manfrotto ... it weighs considerably less ... and is more compact when closed up ... despite being more stable and having a better reach ...

    Carbon may be out of your budget reach but there are decent lightweight alternatives ... such as the Velbon Ultramax ... which I also own ... it is not quite as stable as the Gitzo ... but very compact and portable ...

    One thing to be careful ... good tripods don't always come with a head ... so you need to budget that additonally ... good heads are nearly as expensive as tripods ...

    I'd avoid buying anything in Conns (there is a clue in the name) ... rather go for Gunns of Wexford St (ask for Cathy) or Dublin Camera Exchange on Georges St or Berminghams on the quays near Tara st Station ...

    Actually thats about right , its not much cheaper online for those two.

    Conns in my opinion , is very aptly named ! Personally any time Im in the city and need something photographic , I go to Gunns , its a pleasure to go in there.

    Have a look at www.feisol.com, you might find a wellpriced tripod there.

    Sounds like Gunn's is the place to go then. :) I dont think my BF would be doing anything too physical- certainly not mountain climbing. I reckon he would be using it more for slow exposure type pics- that kinda thing. Do you reckon that model would be suiting most general stuff?

    Feisol tripods are excellent, but not cheap, plus you'll most likely pay duty and VAT on top of the price - as the full invoiced price is on the customs docs. Added to that, the website is atrocious and the OP says her knowledge is limited.

    Go to Gunns, they won't rip you off, and they're really nice people who'll give you sound advice.
