Apologies my ignorance of computers knows no bounds!!!! I actually meant BIOS AND NOT bus anyways i was recently working at home on my laptop and i left my laptop unattended for a few minutes. when i came back i found the laptop had switched itself off and gone into hibernate mode. however, when i tried to switch it back on it would not start. i brought it to a computer shop and they said that the BIOS is corrupted. i was just wondering what is a BIOS and will it be expensive to get it repaired?

I've heard it all now. :D

A corrupt bus? That has to be the most ill-informed nonsense I have ever heard. They are taking you for a fool, don't listen to them.

Briefly, a bus in a computer system is like a roadway for data to travel along. Think of cars and trucks as being chunks of data traveling along this roadway, from, say your hard disk to your screen.

How exactly you corrupt what is essentially a set of wires, is beyond me. How you repair a set of microscopic wires is also beyond me, and I've opened plenty of laptops.

Ok, try removing the battery, remove the power supply and hold the on/off button down for 20 seconds. Then reconnect the power supply (leave the battery out) and try powering it on.

If that doesn't work, try the opposite - plug out the power supply, insert the battery and try again.

Indeed their discription of the fault seems a bit rediculous alright. Are you sure they didnt mention ram or hard drive being the cause of the issue?Because thats what it sounds like. In fact I don't know of any technician that could narrow down a problem on a laptop to the bus being the issue..
Edit: Also is it possible it was Bios and not bus?

    Yeah, that sounds more probable.

I'm pretty sure all you have to do is flash a new bios to fix it. I haven't done this before but if it goes wrong it could brick your laptop so you may want to get someone you know who is good with computers or has done this thing before to do it for you.

    its pretty simple to do.

go to your laptop makers homepage. support section. downloads, pic your machine and chose bios.

download the file, its probably a zip file.

extract it run the file and it will ask to insert a blank cd.
you will of course need ANOTHER COMPUTER!

then, turn on your laptop, press f2 or whatever will get you into boot options on your load screen.

choose your cd/dvd drive as your no.1 and your hdd ans no.2

then insert the cd and reboot the machine.

it will flash itself in a few sceonds.

its not as dangerous as everybody makes out!!!! dont worry!!!!

its a five minute job like!

just make sure you dnt do anything while the new bios is installing, definately make sure your laptop is plugged into external power source.

    have fun!

Yeah, that's very straight forward for an inexperienced user to do.

We haven't confirmed what exactly the problem is yet, so I wouldn't go rushing in with flashing the Bios yet.
