I've always wondered this, and want to know esp. considering how weak the dollar is now.

If I buy an mp3 player online for $200 and get it shipped here, do I have to pay customs tax on it? If so, how much (around) would it be. I have my eye on a creative zen 16GB and a 16GB SD, which comes in at about $280 (or €180) altogether whereas over here it'd probably be nearer €300.

yes you have to pay tax of 21% and then customs charges that vary depending on the goods.

it works out at about 25% of the dollar converted to euro value (including shipping) of the good.

say it cost $300 to ship the zen 16gig and the 16gig card then convert that to euro then add 25% for the vat and customs charges that's what you'll pay. also couriers may take an administration charge of like ~€10 as they pay the customs charges to get it released from customs so they can get your parcel to you quicker.

for further discussion on this thread, giving detail on how to evade customs is a bannable offence also so is asking.

This is taken from the current American Eagle clothes thread in bargain alerts:

On the basis of feedback from people who have been ordering stuff from the US, anything above $140 is likely to get hit for VAT.

Dont think you will get away with not having to pay any tax, I got stung for the VAT and then an import tax on top of that ! They sc**w us over in this country with pricing and taxes !

    Good point.

    Try this one:

Ado, I disagree. Keep the purchases under the legal limit and you don't get hit for VAT. Simple as that.

I got an archos last year cost €320 (would have cost much more here). I was prepared to pay the tax if necessary, but I never got charged for it. If you are prepared to pay it then the chance that you might not would only be a bonus.
