From reading this thread here: http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055260242 (Want ot buy a new amp for home theater) and a comment within regarding 2 amps, 1 dedicated to music and a av amp for cinema duties.

Just wondering how such a setup would work?

I imaging the music amp powers the 2 front (or rear?) speakers and the AV amp all other speakers. is the connection between the 2 amps from pre-outs on the AV amp?

    yes.

You could buy 5 (or 7) monoblock amps if you wanted to, thereby having an amp for each specific channel.

Most 5/7 channel power amplifiers that do nothing other than take a single rca or balanced input and amplify that channel will work fine for whichever channels have an input signal.

i.e. if you run stereo, then you are powering 2 channels, prologic could be 4, full hd audio could be all 7 etc.

Not quite. Your stereo (music) amp acts as a "pre amp" and the AV duties are handled by a multi channel "power amp". The chances of a standard amp/AV amp being able to do this are slim so you'd have to ensure your current setup can do this or buy new shiny boxes.

Yamaha make (or did make) a processor which was designed specifically for this job and it was very good.

It should be said that unless you have a superduper stereo amp that you just can't live without this approach can be both expensive and a bit complicated. A good AV, while never high end, will match most "budget" stereo amps so if you can accept the compromise it's the easier solution.

Still not quite sure i understand it  I'll read up a little later.

I've no intention to run such a setup, at least not now. Me wanting to know more about it from the other thread was all.

Currently i have a Marantz (SR5400) in my room with 4 speakers, before this i had a budget sony amp powering 1 set of speakers. I'm quite happy with the sound it produces for music, it's been a long time since i used it for movies (shame really) since i no longer have a tv in my room.

    have a look a Tangent av-100 or eltax av-900
both sound very good and 2 ch stereo is pretty good but as it was already said this option is always going to be a compromise in purist terms.
