Too many great films to choose.. he always puts in a top notch performance even in mediocre films.

I went to see The Darjeeling Limited because I heard Bill Murray was in it. I was very dissapointed as to how little he featured (only two scenes iirc) it was an alright film otherwise though

Oh yeah, lets all hail the voice of Garfield! ;)

I think that was just Wes Anderson's bizarre sense of humour at work. I laughed though - great little cameo, and superb film.
And yeah, anything Wes Anderson would be my favourite. Although I love Lost In Translation and Ghostbusters, nothing beats the beautiful combo of Wes Anderson quirkiness and Bill Murray melancholy acting rountine.

Caddyshack for me, thought he was great in it.

For me it has to be Ghostbusters, one of the few films which defined my childhood. It's a timeless classic which only seems to get better with each viewing and is impossible to grow tired of and believe you me I know. My younger brother loves both Ghostbusters and the SpongeBob Movie, and in the past year I've had to buy two new copies of SpongeBob and three of Ghostbusters. For a period last year I saw Ghostbusters every day for two months, as he insisted on watching it every morning and there really is something special about a film which can make a 21 year old and a 4 year old laugh at the same time and never tire of it.

Love Bill Murray's work. My favorites are Ghostbusters (a childhood favorite that still holds up today) and Rushmore. His deadpan delivery is just so good.

Lost in Translation, one of my top 5 all-time favourite films
    Caddyshack (Carl is a legend!)
Quick Change, although nobody else seems to have ever heard of the film, never mind seen it

Hi I met Bill Murray back in 1994/95 in London while he was making the Movie Larger then Life, not one of his best but he has so many other good movies... At the Time I was a manager of a wine bar and unbeknown to me they were shooting the movie in the Great Eastern Hotel adjoined to the Wine bar (The City of London). He had obviously asked if he could make a private phone call somewhere and was led to my shared office. So when I arrived in that morning for work I walked in on him and exclaimed,” Dan Aykroyd! What are you doing here?” We got on great after that and he was very polite to everyone and a top bloke. He as funny in real life kept everyone entertained.
Just thought Id share my story!
My Favourite was What about Bob and The Royal Tenenbaums.

His best movie is definetly Stripes. That movie is Murray at his best, ably supported by a cast who would nearly all go on to become well known comedy stars of the 1980s.

If the Americans had more guys like John Winger in their army they'd have sorted out this whole Iraq-dealie a years ago.

    big ern what a legend

I loved Groundhog Day. Kingpin was great too

For me, I'm having difficulty deciding which film I prefer him in: Lost in Translation or Groundhog Day. He is just superb in both of them. In the case of Groundhog Day, he is extremely funny and also does a great portrayal of a man reaching the end of his tether in the middle of the film. His humour in Lost in Translation is more understated, but he plays a great role in that film.

My next choice after those two would be Scrooged. He is hilarious in this.

I enjoyed Bill Murray in Ghostbusters but would not rate it as good as the previous three.

I just realised there are so many films with Bill Murray that I have not seen. Must do something about this...

The best comedy actor of all time IMO. My favourite would have to be Groundhog Day, I could watch that film over and over and over and over again :pac:.

Didn't like The Royal Tenenbaums or Life Aquatic maybe I missed it but would watch Groundhog Day anytime.

You didn't miss anything. They're both Wes Anderson Movies. Wes Anderson sucks for the most part.

Pigman can't really say much after giving praise to Stripes, which, in all fairness, was a horrendous movie.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

    Stripes is a classic.

The only good thing I can say about Wes Anderson is that so far at least each of his new movies sucked less than the last one did.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 143 ✭✭Nordwind

Well you're wrong about Stripes, that's for sure. Appalling stuff.

As for Murray's best? Hmm, I've seen roughly five films that he's been in but none of them are really that good. He's the only good thing in Kingpin but he doesn't feature in it that much. Excellent in Groundhog day but the film isn't that good itself.

    Groundhog Day - Brill film

Bill Murray is probably my favourite comedy actor. Thread about Will Ferrell here but he's not done much to compare to Murray.

Lost in Translation is one of my favourite films. I think his character in that is probably pretty close to his real life personality.

Groundhog Day is just classic comedy, even though I know plenty who hate it.

Rushmore is also great, even though I'm not a Wes Anderson fan at all. Not mad about the 'quirkiness' which mostly involves the actors all sitting around doing their best not to smile. I think Rushmore avoids that mostly though.

Still a lot of his films I haven't seen though...

I would have to go for What About Bob

    tis a classic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭matrixroyal

has to be What about Bob ?

He was on top form in that, really carried the film.
If you haven't seen it, you should try to rent it , if you can find it of course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,005 ✭✭✭Creature

Yeah What About Bob is great. The Man Who Knew Too Little is another underrated Bill Murray classic.

I'd have to go with his scene in Coffee and Cigarettes. I love Wu Tang Clan and it was really funny to see them take the piss out of each other. "Damn, Bill Murray."

Rushmore and Life Aquatic are up there although I'd have to say Quick Change. He co-directed it too and it's damn funny. Great Phil Hartman cameo in it also.

Groundhog Day and Lost In Translation for me, with honourable mentions to Caddyshack and The Life Aquatic.

He was in The Royal Tenenbaums? A bit overshadowed by Hackman and Huston, if so.

I love nearly everything he does, he has a great deadpan style with top delivery. What About Bob? is a little gem. Nice to see it gets a mention.

He's a reall funny guy off screen too. He did Cat's Laughs festival in kilkenny about 10 years ago and was up for a few beers afterward. Very friendly

If he is in a film, he improves the quality of the film by at least 40%!! thus he should be in every film to improve conditions for the cinema world overall

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

whats great about Bill Murray is that he usually plays an egotistical cynic yet always comes across very likable. It would be hard for many other actors to play such a character and not end up being hated. The best example is Kingpin, even though Bills character should be detestable I found I didn't know who to root for as Bill was just too hilarious. Also, whats even more amazing is that in Kingpin Bill Murray was allowed to make up most of his own lines, its only when watching this movie knowing this that you realise how amazing Bill is as an actor as his scenes pretty much save this movie from being an average comedy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,206 ✭✭✭gustavo

I think a lot of his likeability is in his face , it's quite a sad face in many ways but very expressive :) Groundhog day for me is my favourite

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭emkey

    + 1 for Groundhog Day

His character in kingpin was absolutly hilarious!! Hes lookin a bit shook in that original photo though!
Also i actually loved broken flowers too, his miserible sarcastic ways remind me of myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 451 ✭✭Lawless_Samurai

I did like him in kingpin and ghostbusters would br another. Besides that though I'm not his biggest fan  (cue abuse!). I have a friend who used to talk non stop about him every time we talked about films (which would be alot) and I think that has something to do with it.

Don't get me wrong I think he is a great actor I'm just not his biggest fan
