Ahem, tooltips for Finder

It might be heretical but can anyone tell me how to get minimal file info for a file / folder / network location just by hovering over its icon in Tiger?

I would rather not have to keep using right click > file info and then close a window that defaults to the left hand side of the screen.

Might not help your particular request, but in Leopard's finder (not sure if it's present in Tiger), under view options (CMD + J), you can tick a box marked "Show Item Info", which gives you the sizes of Volumes, and the number of items within folders.

I too was going to suggest that but thought it made the Finder look untidy and wasn't quite what the OP was looking for. The Windows "Properties" pane is, have I have to concede, useful, is that what the OP wanted ?

I was thinking more in the way of a small yellow box appearing to hover over a file or folder's icon to tell me how big it is, when it was created etc. I'd rather not have to keystroke everything to see that kind of info.

Why don't you just use list view?
