I'm not much of an authority on sports photography by any means but I'll try my best. The colour seems much better in the Monaghan match, maybe the Kildare ones need a bit more contrast. The ones that stand out for me are #5,#6,#7,#10,#12 and #14. You've captured the action really well and there's a real sense of motion. The others(although there are some great facial expressions!) are a bit too placid for me.I think #8 would look great if you cropped it down to the 2 players in the air.The 2 players standing by don't really add anything to the photo in my opinion. Some great shots there especially 12 and 14,all they need is a bit more contrast. The 2nd last is quite good too by the way,the kildare guy looks very determined:p

Excellent stuff Chris, I love shooting daytime sports. Good selection here, you could pick any of these but second one would be my favourite..

Plenty of shooting opportunities over the next few weekends if anyone wants to come along to a game with me. Will be going to Colleges All-Ireland Hurling Semi-Final this weekend between Dublin & Thurles. Probably in Portlaoise.

The following 2 weekends Dublin face Roscommon & Meath in Parnell Pk (probably Sat evening games, at least one) so maybe one of these may be good for a boards sports outing???

I'd certainly be on for a Dubs game in Parnell Park.

The next two home games are:

05 April, 19:00 (NFL) Dublin v Roscommon (Parnell Park)

13 April, 14:30 (NFL) Dublin v Meath (Parnell Park)

The atmosphere at night games is always good. Which one do you think?

Either, both. I think the Dublin V Meath game will have a bit more bite to it. :D

I like the pictures! Especially the the second one of Shane Ryan. I'd like to try some sports photography at some stage and was just wondering what lens you were using?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 707 ✭✭✭OnLooker

    Canon 70-200mm f2.8 Lens & Canon 400d Camera.

Thanks, I was just wondering. I've a 400d, a nifty fifty and a canon EF28-90mm f4-5.6 that i got with another camera, don't really think that'd be suitable for sports stuff? I might give it a go with that anyway and see how it goes. Planning on getting a zoom but until then I'll have to make do with what I've got!

You'd probably need something with a bit more reach for sports. But, if you're going to this game, I can let you try out my 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS L lens, since I won't be using it.

Cheers, not 100% sure if I can make it yet though. Hopefully I'll be there. I had a look at your website, the sports tips were helpful.

Just one last question, I was thinking about getting 70-300mm f/4-5.6 lens. Would I be wasting my time trying to use this for sports photography because of the aperture (I see you usually shoot wider than f/4) or would it be okay during day time? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

For daytime sports, you should be fine. But, if it gets dull or dark, you may struggle a little.

Most sports would be shot between f/2.8 and f/5.6 ... depending on lens/conditions, since you want as fast a shutter speed as you can get, to freeze the action.

Yeah, I thought it might not be able to handle anything other than day light. Don't think I'll be affording a f2.8 zoom for a long time though!! Thanks for the help.

Paul - it would appear that your website has been hacked...

Ah damn Russians. They loaded a load of scripts, and messed up my whole site.

I think it's all restored to working order now though.

Hosting service wasn't able to trace them, other than the scripts that were loaded. They took a copy of my whole site, and it was all emailed off to Russia. Ah well, at least it wasn't anything sensitive, just my photos and some photography tips.

    Thanks again for spotting it.

No problem. As a matter of interest who are you hosted with? I wouldn't be happy with any host that was that insecure - regardless of the price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Seemingly, it was due to some script I installed, or the way I was using it. It was down to a guestbook I was using on a different domain, linked in.

So, they've now secured my site, and checked the contents.

In general though, they're a brilliant hosting company, with great functions and price. There are a few other boards members who use them too.

    The company is SiteGround.

I like the fourth picture i think with the dublin player surrounded on the ground. The crowd are leaning over the wall and Parnell looks packed. Reminiscent of an old football match from the 30's when they were packed in like sardines.

Some very good action shots there.

I might head to Parnell Park Saturday, depending on other things.
