Comparing N95 Nokia to standard range AF 35mm SLR Camera?

How would one compare a Nokia N95 to a standard range 35mm AF SLR camera? (With out the zoom lenses). I travelled around the states and Australia in the early 1990ies with this Pentax SF1N SLR camera. It weighed a ton and was bulky and I used it mainly for snap shots. I am producing much the same quality pictures with the N95. Dose the Carl Zeiss lense make much difference or is this just a gimmic to sell this Camphone?

Well, really it's the sensor size.

The pics you're taking look grand on the screen, but try printing, and I'm sure you'll see the difference. The Carl Zeiss glass is great, but as far as I know, a lot of it just has the CZ name on it these days.

If you're travelling again, or want a camera, I'd be looking at either a newer 35mm SLR, or a digital one.

Sorry now, but this is a very foolish question.
The Nokia N95 is a phone!
I have one & love it, but it's not a patch on an SLR.
You get nowhere near the clarity or colour.

The N95 may match a P&S camera reasonably well. iirc it even has a rudimentary flash.
But the compact optics will cause all manner of image quality issues.

small sensor = more noise (fewer photons detected per photosite)

Like I said, I love the N95, but there's not a hope in hell you'd get me to swap a DSLR for one!

But the Sony Ericsson K800i's camera has really impressed me for a camera phone camera. It even has a real flash (xenon flash instead of led lamp).

I think that while these cameras cannot hope to compete with dSLRs (they don't try to) they do make an alternative to compact snapshot shooting cameras. Unless there's something extra that you require (more zoom range, faster operation times etc.) A camera phone can be a great way to document unexpected things/social photos.

It's the memory, not the photo that counts in the end right? ;)

look into the n82, best camerafone from nokia and it produces excellent pics even in low light with its xenon flash

got the n95 and although I really like it, the camera is around the same as a standard compact point and shoot.

In really good sunlight you can get decent pictures but it's not great in any other situation. It's fine if you just want small pictures to put on facebook but the quality and control just don't compare to a proper SLR.

Can someone with this phone please post a few photos taken with it and we might be in a better position to come to some conclusion?

It's not hard to come to a conclusion.

If you assume the size of sensor on an SLR is 1cm x1cm (it's a lot more and it's not square), then you can expect the sensor size on the N95 to be 3mmx3mm.

There is no way it can capture near the same amount of quality, colour or detail in an image.
