Anyone on here know if its hard to get a job in the civil service. Entry level i mean.

Would being a fluent Irish speaker be of much advantage?

    see http://www.publicjobs.ie/

first thing is an assessment test - there is sample papers on line. after that if you pass the test, there is an interview and then you are placed on a panel. you can also select which county you wish to work in.

at present, just had a quick look, there is no current vacancies, but you can register for interest in further vacancies

There are also some other quasi CS organisations that don't advertise on publicjobs. They have all the same working conditions and benefits as a full CS position.

Keep your eye on the newspapers they usually have stuff in the Irish Times jobs section (I think it's out on a Thursday)

Done the tests for clerical officer in November. There are 4 different timed sections such as verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, clerical checking. They are basically a test of your ability for basic tasks and also speed. Pretty simple really. You can practice them on the public jobs website as they do samples that are pretty much identical to what's on the paper. One word of advice is bring a ruler. You may not be allowed to use it but its worth a shot and makes the clerical checking section a whole lot easier

You've to sit the aptitude test first, and there is an optional Irish language section at the end.

Once you've done the test you should get some feedback about how you've done in relation to the other candidates that also took the tests.

Depending on how you place you will then get called for an interview.

Know your CV inside and out! Most interviews will start with your CV so if your well versed in it, it will relax you and set a good tone for the rest of the interview.

Also have examples ready so for example when they ask how you would deal with a difficult client/customer, you can use your example

This is where i go wrong, the thing is most of the jobs i am going for i'm over qualified for them, but i just can't bring myself across right in the interviews ... :( I need to get heaps of examples and learn them off i suppose!!! I wish i had a tutor ....
Really need to get a job soon ... saw a girl on rte last night she had no qualifications for jobs but was so confident in her approach she got offered all the ones she went to at the interviews ... I was so bloody jealous!
