Ghost player at my table

Earlier today I was playing a $5 rebuy tournament on ipoker and some strange things were happening at my table. Bascially there were 8 players at the table yet there must have been 9 because someone it was giving me the options to bet check yet all players in the hand were said to be folded. So I check here and the next thing I know someone is after betting 10k.
So now I am left with the decision and I have no idea which seat this bet came from any I dont know how much this ghost player has either.

I wasn't able to pay to much attention to this as I was on the FT of another game at the same time and the money was starting to get big. So I just took a screenshot of this, I have looked through the HH file and I can't find this hand anywhere. A similar hand happened just before this and I have no idea what happened in it either.

Has this happened anyone before? This isn't a joke either btw.

Something similar happened to me few weeks ago, also on i poker but it was a 6 seat sit and go but it seemed there was a 'ghost' 7th player. e.g. i bet, other 5 players fold and suddenly im facing a raise???? Had forgotten about it until i read this thread??

Things like this used to happen on tribecca. It's purely a latency issue.

I once only got a 2 card flop and tried to double down with my 8-3o.

yeah I immediately thought of Tribeca when I read this.

It doesn't matter if it's "purely a latency issue", it could cost someone a lot of money.

The thing is it's not necessarily the site's fault. It can be as a result of dropped packets by your network card or your router or just somewhere else. When it's happened to me I've asked other players at the table wtf happened and they noticed nothing.

I've seen this happen on party a lot too where the previous pot has just been awarded and when the next hand starts the pot is still in front of the player as if that's his bet for the current hand and the blinds are missing. Sometimes it looks like the guy has gone all in and he hasn't even acted yet.

The thing is this happened me twice at the same table while the other table I had opened was playing fine. Would this not be a coincidence really? I'll try to find the other hand history now. Basically I got awarded the pot in the previous hand and I have no idea why.

This really could cost someone alot of money. How would you feel if this happened you on the bubble of a WSOP ticket. You would be devastated, I wonder as well who would be at fault?

These 2 hands occur right after each other. If you look at the chip counts then there is something badly wrong somewhere as I have 8.5k chips more in the next hand when I should just have 1k. There must have been some other player at the table that I knocked out because surely 1 of the other players would have recognized that I got a lot more chips for nothing it seems.

Maybe they were just trying to settle the score as I got chips here for nothing it seems and then I'm back to almost where I was after the hand above.

I don't buy that it's not the site's fault. Network level problems such as dropped /late packets are happening all the time. TCP/IP is doing it's funky kung fu to make sure this is transparent to the application.

If things get very bad you might expect your client to fall behind a bit, but it should never get into state where you see a two card flop or have a phantom player. Or at least if you do have a two card flop, the other card should be present before any other activity can occur on the table, such as other bets etc. If the client is seeing other player activity but is not showing, for example, the third card of the flop it is poor design that the client can not resynch with the server's view of the hand. i.e. The client should have the smarts to know there's something wrong with it's view.

It's another bug. It might not be that easy for them to fix, but it can't be explained away by an unreliable network.

no it is 100% the site's fault. Everyone knows iPoker handles dropped packets very badly, but usually this just means disconnection, not actions from a different hand coming in in the middle of a hand. If you are going to write any piece of software that works over a network, you should have some plan to handle dropped packets.

Occasionally the US Department of Defense routers drop some packets. If that accidentally nuked Moscow, yes, that would be the programmer's fault. Both the DoD and PokerStars, to give two examples, took care while writing their software to make sure this wouldn't happen.

I can't believe you were both a professional sysadmin and a professional poker player.

Now that you mention it, I have plyed in IPOKER before and the betting has went a bit crazy, people being asked to bet out of turn etc. I always thought it was something to do with my online connection. Happend 2 or 3 times Id say. DONT LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN, AIGHHHT!

You weren't playing on MiniView were you, theres a known bug on iPoker whereby if you start on FullView and then switch to MiniView some seat positions appear to change so that it looks like people are seated Cutoff/BB/Button/SB ?
I've a screenshot of it somewhere, very very trippy.

I know. Most people find hard to believe I even went to skool.

You're totally right about the poker clients though. I've never seen this issue with Stars so they probably have some sort of parity check at the client level built into the software.

I was all in, in a rebuy event and the flop hasn't even been dealt and yet the . DO YOU WANT TO REBUY dialogue box popped up. (eerie eh?)
I feared the worst. I try to be optimistic in these situations but somehow the dialouge box has predicted the future and I'm left with the reload option as it had told me., I waited for more advice from the dialogue box but I was timed out of the tournament and left wondering what the future really did hold for me. Then I got a text message...GO TO THE PUB form a number I didn't know. I went to the pub and rebought several times.

Its dropped packets but they should NEVER manifest themselves as ghost players at a table. Its lunacy that its not sorted out.
