Codec Issue?

    After a clean install of XP Pro, some video files (AVI mostly) will only have sound when played using WMP11.

    DVD discs (VOB Files) will play fine using PowerDVD 7 Deluxe.

    So I install either the combined Community Codec Pack or KLite Codec Pack & all the problematic AVI files play perfectly in WMP11 (Both Audio & Picture) but DVD discs now only have sound in PowerDVD 7 Deluxe & no picture.

    WTF is going on with that?

    This is not my machine so recommending something like VLC is not an option because the owner wants WMP11 & PowerDVD.

    :confused::confused::confused:

    Have you tried re-installing PowerDVD 7 Deluxe?

    Yes I have, but no joy.

    PowerDVD works fine once I uninstall the other codec pack, so something is happening to PowerDVD's own codec when the Klite or CCCP is installed?

    Also I noticed that when a DVD is playing in PowerDVD (With no picture) if I keep clicking on the blank screen I can see the video flashing on & off momentarily as I click.

    It's as if it (PowerDVD) is actually displaying it in the background so to speak.

    If the owner won't go with VLC, then you can use a video encoder program to find the mime type of the file. AVI is actually quite a broad extension. MOst commonly, if it won't play in media player it's probably DivX or XVid codecs you want.

    And that is exactly what the problem was.

    I used GSpot to tell me which Codec was required & it was DIVX 50.

    It wasn't installed but when I did install it everything worked fine.

    Cheers.
