Excuse my ignorance if this is a stupid question.

Im just back from New York where I got a 16gb Ipod Touch. It has software version 1.1.3 so it has the weather, mail, stocks etc on the homepage. Basically everything that comes in the upgrade thats for sale on itunes.

I havnt had the opportunity to connect my itunes account the the net yet as Im waiting for a broadband connection next week. So ive just put some songs and photos on it form my pc. I have used the ipod over wifi in work but I cant use itunes on the go until I sync my ipod over the internet.

Basically my question is: Everyone is talking about jailbreaking their ipods using the 'installer'. Where do I get the installer? Will it show up once I sync my ipod online? Or can I download it somewhere?

You get installer after you jailbreak, it's an application for installing new applications. Search around a few forums like www.ipodtouchfans.com and you'll understand it all in no time.

'Jailbreaking' your ipod lets you add loads of really cool apps and also lets you customize the theme (background/icons) on your ipod.
Heres a screenshot of my jailbroken ipods home screen:
    44hjx9wg23fn7xrdj9z_thumb.png
(This is only my first home screen, I have many more apps on my others. M ipod is one of the plainest in terms of the theme I'm using)

Easiest way to Jailbreak your iPod.
    1.Go Here: http://download.ziphone.org/
    2.Download and install ZiPhone.
    3.Open ZiPhone.
4.Connect your iPod to your computer.
    5.Click 'Jailbreak' iPod Touch.
6.Wait about 45 seconds (Loads of magical white text appears on your iPod screen during this time)
    7.Your iPod reboots.
    8.You're done.

You then use Installer to add more apps. (You must be at a wifi hotspot)
You really need to install 'BSD Subsystem' and 'Summerboard' from Installer.
(BSD Subsystem is needed by many apps, summerboard lets you change the theme on your ipod)

Play around with the other apps.
You can uninstall anything you don't like using the Uninstall section of Installer.

I was in same situation as you OP, got 16gb touch on 1.1.3 but I didn't have the Iphone apps. Jailbroke the phone using very handy video on youtube and only one app (got it on second attempt, first attempt had to do hard reset!!). Installer came with that and rest as they say is history!
