    Hi,

I have an interview for the Telecommunications section in the guards next week.

Anybody done or waiting for interview? Anbody know of someone working there, what they think of the job.

Any advice on what type of interview it is.

How many interviewers on the panel etc.

I saw on the web somewhere that there is 31 positions on offer.

The interview is taking place in the Public Jobs office on Abbey Street.

I am really interested in the position as it's something I know I will be good at and really enjoy.

I am working as a Java programmer at the moment and not liking what I am doing. Just graduated from college last year with a first in Computer Science. I initially went to college to do networking particularly Cisco but seems to be 10 programming jobs to 1 Networking position. So I took a Java position to see what it's like so not to have regrets in the future. I am not a bad at the Java programming actually did very well in college at it.

Will I be working for the Civil Service or the Guards

Going from the booklet it seems to indicate Civil Service pay structure.

Anyways any advice or tips on the above is much appreciated.

    Cheers

Do you have a link for this job? Do you know can you still apply?

OP:As far as I know you will be employed by An Garda Siochana, I'd also probably start galling the service the gardaí instead of guards (they tend to get offended) From looking into it originally I got the impression the job would be very heavy in the telecoms area of things. There are rumours in the GS that the roll out of the new digital radio system beond the current few test areas is immenient and that is the reason for this drive

    Digiman: The applications closed a good few weeks ago;

Would there be any way of sending in a late application? Do you know where the original job was posted or have an email address were I could send in my C.V.?

    Thanks gerire for that info.
I think the first town to be rolled out with the new digital system was Balbriggan. Saw that somewhere on the web. What gives you the impression it is not heavy in the telecoms area! It does cover a wide range of technologies alright. Hope I can maybe specialize when I get the job (being positive :-) )

I got the sod off letter in the post this week. Apparently like 150 applied and like 100 or so were short listed. I was in the bottom third!! lol

Seems like they don't fully grasp the concept of "short" listing...

Let us know how it goes, what questions etc, how the interview was conducted. Might be useful if another job similar comes up.

    Best of luck and all!

For what its worth, here is the information for this same position from last year. They would not budge higher than this wages wise so I turned it down.

FeelingTired was your application made through an agency! or was it made through public jobs.

    It states in the application that the salary is as follows;

    ******************************************************************

Part 1 Conditions which apply particularly to this position

    Pay

    1. The scale of pay is as follows

    Modified Scale
    €29,093, €31,223, €32,855, €34,439, €36,014, €37,555, €39,112, €40,627, €42,187, €43,227, €44,697 (LSI 1)*, €46,167 (LSI 2) **

    PPC (Personal Pension Contribution) Scale
    €30,628, €32,863, €34,584, €36,248, €37,906, €39,530, €41,170, €42,766, €44,410, €45,499, €47,048 (LSI 1)*, €48,594 (LSI 2) **

    * After three years satisfactory service on the maximum of the scale
** After six years satisfactory service on the maximum of the scale

Increments (apart from long service increments awarded after 3 or 6 years satisfactory service on the maximum) are granted annually if the officer’s services are satisfactory.

    Starting Salary and Payment Arrangements

Entry will be at the minimum of the appropriate scale. Consideration may be given to the possibility of placing an appointee whose qualifications and/or experience would be of particular value for the position, at a point above the minimum.

    ******************************************************************

Is this another way of describing the way you were made an offer. For example the starting salary is €29,093 is this broken down to more or less the way it was described in your offer.

Did you go for an interview? If so what was it like.

Did you look for a higher wage. If so what experience/education did you have when applying. What sort of answers did you get when asking for a better offer!

    Cheers :)

Heard the money for this job was rubbish aswell, from what was posted above, sounds more like grad positions than anything, not sure what the role would encompass as the new Tetra network is being rolled out by Tetra Ireland and will be run and operated by Tetra Ireland as a managed services network.

Knew a few guys who used to work in Garda dept, apparently they didn't get up to much, if interested in working in Garda Telecom network, would look at Tetra Ireland, but will be 1.5-2yrs before that network is operational, start date is being put further back and back, 4 or 5 test sites built AFAIK.

I assume you've done your interview kennear?? How was it? Did you find out anything more about the job? Or the salary??

    Anything further on this job?

Did anybody go to the interview?

Who interviewed you? What did they say the job entailed? Where would you work out of? Would you work alongside Gardai who are already doing this work? Etc, etc?

Had an interview a few months back. There was 3 on the board, Garda Telecoms Rep, PSNI Telecoms Rep and a public jobs Rep. They mainly asked me about the experience which I had selected on the skills matrix when filling out the application form.
I was successful and I was given a number on the order of merit, apparantly there are 30 jobs and I was below that.
I completed a large vetting form 5 weeks ago and I haven't heard anything since. Anyone in the same boat or know what time lines I can expect ?

7% shift allowance is pretty poor... what kind of shift hours do they expect your to work?

I'm in a similar situation. Waiting 3 weeks now for medical and vetting clearance.
I've rang them so often at this stage to clarify various things I think I'll just wait it out.

Cheers, still no word. I guess your right "no option but to wait it out" but it would be nice to have some idea how long this will take !!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 kennear

Yeah got on the panel as well, still waiting though
I rang Public Jobs and asked if there is chance if these jobs r still there with all the cut backs in the government etc.. She said she never heard  have 2 wait it out & c. She also said it can take up to 3 months 4 the vetting form 2 b cleared

Will somebody post in when they r something.
Did anybody discuss salary in the interview. I did not but hope 2 get more than what was offered I think it was 31K  Has this salary gone up coz as far as I know the civil service went up 2 33K I think the last time I looked.

    Thanks.....

    Hi,

Got an email stating that the terms of this role had changed and to let them know if I was still interested. Did anyone else get this and if so what are your thoughts ? I informed them that I was still interested and queried as to what the delay was, they are still waiting for my vetting form back which I sent in on the 23rd of June:confused:
