you dont actually need a special skype phone as such, a web cam with a built in mic works or even a bluetooth headset for a mobile also works well if your pc
    has bluetooth.

Go to the skype site and have a look there.

you can call other pc's for free but to call standard phones you need to
buy credit - call to a land line narmally costs me €0.016 a minute mobile is
    about €0.17 i think.
Also if you want folks to be able to call you from a normal phone
you'll need to get a number from skype , they have different packages.

Can you post a link to the device?

Whether VOIP will work well will depend on your broadband connection, it needs to be fast enough, and have a reasonable quality of service. What sort of connection are you using??

Standalone skype / voip devices are great, especially for receiving calls as you don't need a PC on.

The best thing to do as a test would be to download skype to your PC, try it out and see how it works... if it works well then buy some standalone hardware which means you don't need the PC on 24/7.

There is alot of USB skype phones available, but these need a PC to be on all the time, you'd be as well using a head set €10 as a USB skype phone.

Nice info - thanks. Can you recommend a standalone skype phone and save me the agony of making up my mind! Not too fussed if its dual or not. My pc on from 1000 to 0000 each day so should I go for a USB type? Then again I like the idea of no wires. Regards Michael r. ps I like Linksys but not obsessively.

I'm sorry i'm not too up on skype phones to recomend a good one (I'm blueface all the way :) ). if you have wifi set up, you could try the belkin skype wifi phone, the are over €100, but look a feel like a mobile phone.... completely wireless... i guess in theory you could bring it with you to places that have wifi and make cheap skype calls... that would be handy if in a hotel with wifi in a forign country, you could make dirt cheap calls.... :D

If you want to make calls you could go for a cheap usb phone for starters.

If you want to recieve calls get some sort of stand alone set up, not point having the PC on all day when you don't need to.

I've set up a couple of these for Family.

the one's i've setup connect to your wireless network. Then you login to skype on the phone, it then syncs your contacts to the phone.

It act's like a regular phone the one issue we've found is the 'echoing affect'
sometimes there's an echo on the line but by hanging up and redialling it usually goes.

All in all very nice - i'll probably move myself when broadband speeds up a bit in my local area (back arse of nowhere :))
