    I'm hugely confused ted:D

I assume djpbarry is referring to the fact that its not exploding its breaking, it would seem its of an older design and was unable to cope with the extreme wind.
Where as a lot of newer turbines are designed to be able to keep from going above a certain speed.

If you read the blurb that accompanies the video ("About this video"), you'll see that the brakes (that are supposed to kick in if the rotor's speed rises too high) failed, leading to the failure. It's not rocket science...

    Exploding.

"to burst, fly into pieces, or break up violently with a loud report,"
"To shatter with a loud noise"

    It exploded.

There's nothing wrong or misleading about the term, as it does not, for one second, suggest that explosives were used.

    Dams burst too.

But if you want stuff that actually explodes then fossil fuel / nuclear power stations FTW

I have seen something similar happen to a French made Aerowatt wind generator on a lighthouse at Ratlin O' Brien in Co Doneygal 20 years ago. The prop shaft snapped clean off the body.

Watching the slo-mo one of the blades flexed and hit the tower, shattered and the unstable rotor shook itself to bits!

Not exploded! (self-destructed would be a better description)

I always thought that the blades could be angled to catch or dodge the wind depending on windspeed? in this instance they should have been at 90deg to the wind to stop them...

if you used a windmill with a vertical axis probably less likely to fly off into someone elses property

Has anyone seen the big one a bloke put at the back of his bungalow on the dublin side of Craughwell, Galway on the main Dublin/Galway route?
Impressive looking turbine i must say.

The blades are not supposed to go that fast. It happends when the brakes of a turbine and there is no generator connected into to take the power. With no load the turbine just keeps speeding up and goes into "overspeed". When this happens the severe forces are acting on the blades and are bending them back untill they eventually hit the tower and "explode"

The angling of the blades is used in some turbines to acheive better power performance and also to act as a brake by turning the blades to a less aerodynamic position.

Eh??? We had that happen once in the Former Soviet Union - and there was nothing FTW about it!
