What did you think of these Russian masterpieces?

Thought these were great movies, I saw daywatch at last on Wednesday.
there seemed to be soo many ideas, creativities and visuals packed into these movies that the stories barely made it out alive.
Anton is such a great character, and khabensky is so good that when he switches bodies, the whole movie deflates a bit for me. Zualon and Boris geser are great leaders of dark and light applying the rules of the pact on both sides, theres a kind of star wars thing going on all along, Everyone waiting with baited bloody breath for the force to tip to one side so the can annihilate the other side, while living up to a truce as thin as a spiders web. Great stuff, fantastic visuals and really great creativity, cant wait for dusk Watch, but have no idea what it may be about.

Have only seen Nightwatch. I thought it was jam packed with great ideas. It was very original and as I said, it probably had more good ideas than most films coming out of America. However, it was a bit of a mess pacewise and storywise.

yep, thats what I am saying, the stories barely make it out, but if you see the two movies together, they really do rock along and it kind of all comes together in the end. The second one is great.

I seen Nightwatch when it came out on dvd and i did enjoy it but Daywatch just didn't do it for me.
There was far too much going on and I'm not ashamed to say at times I wasn't sure what was happening. Maybe I should have watched Nightwatch again first for a refresher.
Thought it was a tad too long aswell.

I didn't particularly like Nightwatch when it came out. I remember the marketing pitching it as the Russian answer to the Matrix, and the trailers suggested all out action adventure. So I was a little disorientated when the actual film turned out to be a far different affair. I thought the pacing was well off, and the story was complete and utter nonsense. Found it difficult to be drawn into.

Daywatch I preferred. As I was prepared for the weird tone and pacing, I knew what to expect, and actually enjoyed it quite a bit. It was completely absurd, of course, but did so with style and humour. Didn't take itself too seriously either, so proved to be a fun diversion.

So interesting, different films with loads of flaws, but worth a gander. Might revisit Nightwatch too, feel as if I should give it another chance.

They are fun films but describing them as masterpieces is quite extreme!!

Have you tried the books? Brilliant read, but be warned: nothing at all like the films. The reason why the films can seem like a bit of a mess sometimes is because most of the scenes in the film either happen to different characters or at completely different times (eg the first scene with Anton and the witch actualy happens in the second book, and to a different character who doesn't actually appear in any other scene)
Also, considering how the 2nd film ends, and what the third book is about, I don't know what the hell will happen in the third film.
Still, I loved the films and think that they are great examples of how you can adapt source material for a movie (quite a bit) but still end up with something quite good if the director actually has any talent.

The third film is not going to be set in Russia. Instead, it'll be filmed with full funding from Fox Searchlight in America, in English. The director has said that the Russian section of the narrative is now over, although a few of the characters may reappear in cameo appearances if possible.

What confuses me is that both Night Watch and Day Watch are adapted from the first book, Night Watch. There are three individual parts to the book, three stories. So I'm wondering if the final movie will be adapted from the last part of the book, and if so how will the story be wrapped up because there are another two books  I imagine they'll just rewrite the ending.

I did enjoy the movies, and I keep meaning to get around to getting the last two books.

it was originally going to be a 12 part tv series in Russia and Nightwatch was going to be the pilot but extra money got thrown into it and because of the success of the release in Russia it became a movie series.Really looking to the 3rd one, thought the first two were great, even though flawed, think that they show great promise of a director who could be very important in the future.

I read the first part of Nightwatch last year, but correct me if I'm wrong didn't
the boy choose the day in it? Whereas in the movie he choose the night?

Only watched Nightwatch and thought that it was a big mess. I'm with the other poster who wanted their money back. Wouldn't watch Daywatch after seeing it.
