Barry, I'm still at a loss when it comes recognising the appeal of your photos.
Still, many people (those who say "your" instead of "you're" noted) think that you're great.
Maybe it's me. I dunno. Are we coming from different ends of the spectrum perhaps?
I try to grab people (musicians) at their height, you seem to get people at their lowest/low people at their mean?

some great photos on that flickr site, congrats! out of the first 20 pages i must say "the fog lights", "the dangerous alley" and "the liberty house lads" really caught my eye. keep up the good work!

    Fine shot there Barry!

I am the very opposite Oriel. I see real people with souls in Barry's shots.

Photos of musicians nearly always seem to me to be the opposite. People preening their egos and stripped of everything that their music may have. No, musicians are definitely better heard than seen. There are some, of course, who are better off not forcing either their image or noise on us. Strangely these are the type who do the most preening and are most aware of the camera. The image of a contorted artist in obvious pain and delerium for their art doesn't do it for me unless I have had the pleasure of experiencing the gig myself anf felt the same degree of extacy

Baz's photos are def excellent and capture the way I'd like to imagine I do but obviously his end product has the quality.

I'd have to agree with Oriel, baz is a fine photographer and some of his images are great, but I don't like photographs of people at their lowest living on the streets (by any photographer) would the contorted faces of the mentally/ physical disabled be deemed as a tasteful topic of photography or maybe the faces of sick children. Faith as dealt all the above with a heavy blow and I don't see the need to record this,It's not about not caring either pictures won't help mend lives.
I do like the above image.

I bet this guy on the bike didnt know he would evoke such a discussion when his photo was taken.

I think that there is a difference to be considered. Social commentary photographs where you take the photograph and dont interact with the subject and where you do interact with the subject.

People who are less fortunate than others would I thought have welcomed Barry and his camera as from I can see he interacts with them, chats to them, acknowledges that they exist and he shows an interest in them rather than most people who airbrush them from their sight as they walk by.

Separate to that is whether you like social commentary photographs compared to other types of photographs.

Social commenatary is Barrys style and he has developed and improved at it in the short time that I have been on boards. He is building up an impressive social commentary collection which will I think stand the test of time. It may be only one element of social commentary (the unfortunate, deprived, homeless or whatever the current PC words are). Someone else is no doubt photographing the other end of the social commentary spectrum but this is what Barry has chosen to focus on (no pun intended!)

I do like the above image.

just to clarify one point , i do care , and thats why i document what i do, i find taking photographs can also help , people have said by looking at an image they will view the less fortunate in a better light -- also i sometimes give potrait prints to some , and they love them -- and thats the acid test for me -- also have spoken to Peter McVerry about the social side of it , and he is one of the very few doing anything positive and worthwhile with many of the lost --- anyway sorry for ranting on , we all have our different view on life and photography, oh i don't want to be known for just potraying the dark side of life , maybe i'll lighten up next year ;) -- it shows my state of mind --- in my crazy mind were all equal and equally crazy in this life.

same, just seem like snap shots to me.
Some Depth of Feild even perhaps?

dont want to be so bland so going to post some street potraits i do appreciate.

They are fantastic, but I happen to really like Baz's posted image above too. I haven't been a huge fan - but some of the recent posted ones I can't help but admire.

The difference between Baz's shots, the above, and maybe some of sasar's stuff is the approach. To create a dramatic or visually appealing image, or simply to document? If Baz had taken his shots with shallow DOFs, or messed with shutter speeds to make them more interesting than depressing would they be more accepted by detractors here?

There's room for all styles, methinks.

thebaz, i have to say i prefer your personal approach to photography and I think your portraits are stunning - especially that guy out in sandycove. :)

im sorry if it sounds harsh but i really don't like photographers who overmanipulate every shot they take - its sort of like "oooh look what I can so in photoshop" mentality lol

its refreshing to see pictures on boards not ruined with post processing

i agree fully , i like dark stuff , Cartier and Bourke , etc , like music theres many different styles to photography , i'm not a huge fan of glossy fashion stuff , but appreciate a lot of work goes into them -- maybe some see my stuff as "snapshots" -- but more goes into them than just pressing a button -- but like music or any Art , we can all have our indivifual taste -- the internet gives us freedom to choose what we like

baz, a lot of your shots have been of people smiling/gurning for the camera, which leave me cold. the one at the start of this thread is great though, as is the one of the ex-boxer you posted a few weeks ago - i think candids work best when the subject is unaware of the camera, or their pose is unaffected by it.

Baz, the 'from a height' pic was obviously taken from the 'new Busaras' building ? how did you get access to the roof there ?

Yes, the tall skinny building that was designed to look like Busaras, but without the kitsch charm...what an eyesore. On a related note, I've been promised a trip up to the top of the Poolbeg chimneys...can't wait!!

Big fan of your photos Barry, however I think you cropped to close to the top of the mans head here. Keep up the good work and don't mind the begrudgers. You should get yourself a proper site (other than smugmug) to show them off better especially now that you have exhibitions.

I haven't seen a lot of your photos Baz but the ones I've seen, I do like.
I think these people are brushed aside a lot and ignored, not everyone on the street is there because of his/her own doing, people with psychological problems for example, often because of a lack of proper care. (I'm not a softie either before anyone goes accusing me of same.) ;)
It's not the type of photography I could see myself doing on the streets of Dublin but all kudos and credit to you. You obviously have a knack for it and I don't agree that photography like this should be brushed under the carpet. True these are people fallen on hard times but you bring out personalities in your photography, candid shots in particular maybe, and isn't that what photography is about or are we only to capture the happy moments?

In other news, I bought a Canon 40D today. I can't believe the difference between that and my old 300D :o .
Heading over to a mates now to snap snap snap.. I might not sleep for days... :p

What sort of dickhead posts something like this by the way?

thanks , mishima -- i used to get rattled , but i know many people don't like or get what i do , including some of my family , photography is like music , people have different tastes , and i've learnt a bit from oriel , and try not to take him too seriously -- live and let live

Oriel. But calling him a dickhead really isn't on. I don't agreee with him in this case, but others here do. And so long as they're not being absuive, they're entitled to express that opinion, particularly when Baz has put his pictures forward for critique.

On that note, I would like to add the following. In my mind, creative endeavours facilitate both heightened artistic expression and social commentary. This is true of all artistic pursuits. There's room for both.

It's nice to find a thread linking Boards.ie and Flickr.
The posters here have lovely work.

I tend to look for urban detail and textures in architecture when I walk round
    Dublin.
