I want to wire up the kitchen and living room for DTT and already have it in 2 bedrooms with good signals without any amplifier using a Y connector to split the feed. As i need a longer cable run to get downstairs i am considering one of these

will it be any use at the masthead end (the aerial is in the attic) or are they only useful at the end of a long cable run?

I am facing similar questions to yourself. I *think* these are more useful at the masthead end, and would make more sense to use it there anyway, as you'd probably be distrubiting from the attic anyway.

But to be honest, I'd try it out WITHOUT using the amplifier first. I had to patch 2 cables in my house (initially intended for supplying cableTV to the house), joined together at an outside NTL point, and the resulting analogue signal from the attic>outside box>sitting room was atrocious. Digital signal though is perfect. The reading on the DVB-T box is low, between 30-40%, but obviously good enough for a perfect picture. I currently have it disconnected, and like yourself, have two bedrooms happily using the ariel in the attic. I'm in an area good enough to get the trial with a rabbit's ears in the living room, so it's ok for now, but I think if I ever want to wire it permanently to an attic, I would probably plump for another ariel in the attic, rather than having to get power up into the attic, and then having something else constantly adding to the electricity bill.

This will work for me, maybe not for you, but something else to think about. You can probably get a pretty good ariel for the same price as the cheapest amplifier in the link you provided, maybe even set-top ones that might work prefectly well, depending on your location of course.

I now have it all set up without an amp and i am not not getting the DTT signal in the kitchen. The analogue pictures are a lot worse too. i have not checked the living room yet.

You lose signal strength with every meter cable and you lose signal strength at a splitter.
Try an amplifier. Btw the signal should be amplified at the beginning of a signal path.
