Changing Course

    Hello,

I'm seriously considering changing courses. I'm currently in 2nd year of a course in DCU and would like to transfer to another course in the college. I have a few questions and would appreciate any information anyone can lend me to help me make a decision.
What is the story with tuition fees if I change course? And would I be required to pass 2nd year of the course I am currently in?
I don't think I can take another year doing this course.

    Thanks in advace!
    -KD

exact same q 3 topics down buddy

but in relation to your questions...
yes, you will be required to pass 2nd year of the course you're currently in. What are you in now, and what do you want to change into?

tuition fees... you'll be required to pay for the 2 years extra tuition that you'll need, normally around €5000 per year.

and you'll need a few people's agreement to change - the chair of the course you're on, the chair of the course you want to move to and then you'll need to have reached matriculation requirements for the course you want to move to.

I'm not 100% sure of the entire process though. Maybe ask the SU for help?

Cool I was aware of the other thread but the questions are slightly different.

So I will have to pass 2nd year? Seems like a kick in the pants that that's a requirement, maybe I'm afraid to look for the logic in it.

I'm currently doing International Relations and want to transfer to multimedia. Yes two completely different course!

I think its to make sure that you're serious about the whole thing and not just taking the easy way out.

If you have the points you could reapply through the CAO thus saving you from having to do the summer exams?

Ya should go talk to the head of your course and the head of MMA just to see what the likelyhood of you being able to change is. I think mma is a very competitive course CAO-wise and I'm not sure of where the preferences lie - as in do the CAO get first refusal of places etc.

You could always stick it out for the other year and do the masters in multimedia?

If I was to apply through the CAO what would the deal be with tuition fees would you know? Sorry for bothering you with these questions!

Tbh I don't think you'll be able to change without restarting from 1st year, unless you can prove you have previous knowledge/experience/skill in Multimedia. Otherwise you'd be out of your depth trying to parachute in (although it's debatable what you'd be missing in 1st MMA anyway, complete doss of a year)

Edit: If you apply through the CAO, you'll have to pay full tuition for 1st and 2nd year. You will still qualify for free fees for 3rd year though.

    Cheers for the info!

I'm looking at the fees now and am kind of confused. How much are the tuition fees for mma? Here's the link: http://www.dcu.ie/finance/fees/programme_costs_eu_humanities.shtml

Mate, if i were you, i'd finish out IR and not bother with Multimedia. 10-12K for it is a rediculous amount of money.

Tbh I found the Multimedia course to be a very broad course, i.e. no particular area of specialisation, you may just find when you've finished it that you want to do a Masters to sort of 'specialise' yourself further. In that case it may be more worth your while to finish the course you're in and just apply for the masters in mma? I don't know but the fact that the B.Sc mma course is 4 years (when I did it- it's 3 now) but you can do a Masters in it in one year without requiring a previous mma degree kind of makes me question how worthwhile it is doing the bachelors degree in it... (I left it after 2nd year btw)
