Can the length of the NCT test vary or does it generally have an average running time? The centre is Kells. I just have something else on that day but if I can sqeeze it in I will leave the booking date as it is

test itself would take about a half hour, not including the admin side etc
but you'd need an hour set a side for it at least, I'd think (been a while since i was at the test centre so my memory of the time might be a bit warped :))

Yeah 30 mins or so for the test but i'd allow 1.5 for delays etc..

I've done the NCT about a dozen times and in my experience it depends. Don't ask me why. Average was about 30 minutes. The quickest was a Fiesta (20 minutes) and the longest were my old big BMWs (40 minutes). Maybe they are extra thorough when it comes to big / old / powerful cars?

That's the time from when the car is driven in and hooked up to the exhaust reader till the car is driven out

My examiner went for a big dump during a test yesterday, so that added about five minutes.

They will occasionally randomly request that your car is used for staff training purposes. If you consent, it will take about an hour to be tested.

Today, mine took longer than normal, 45mins.
There was a huge que and surprise surprise, they failed me on a mickey mouse fault.

They must have had an inspector or something in today.

Dont take it as a given that you will be seen at the time you are booked; they are usually fairly good but Ive been there before where it was a while before my car was actually taken in for the test. I wouldnt be squeezing too tightly if I were you!

    Ah no, not at all.

It's just that like was said above, usually in and out in a flash, no bother.
    But today was just different.

Thankfully it was a lot shorter than when this thread was first started. :P
