semi solid floor

My 6 year old semi solid wood floor looks 'tired' and I would like to sand and revarnish it. Is this possible and is there a special type of varnish I should use. The previous floor here was old solid boards and I used sand by hand and varnish them every year. I am just wondering if I can do the same now?
