I think the team he has named tonight just shows he has no intention of blooding in sexton to help Ireland. There was no reason contepomi could not have played 12 or 13 and put sexton as out half.Im really annoyed with this,it may have something to do with him coming back from injury but if you broke your arm and are named as a sub,you must be in good enough condition to play a match or at least start him and take him off at half time.

Or play Contepomi for the first half, and Sexton for the second? The logic being that the superior fly half would have helped to enough to win the game, instead of having to try and save it (maybe) in the second half. I'm not saying I agree with this line fully, mind you, but its something to think about.

I'd say what you'll see is Berne or Warner giving way around the 40/50 minute mark, contepomi switching into centre, and sexton coming on at 10 then. least thats what i'm hoping.

Two more years of this stuff  Least we can move the hate campaign from EOS to Cheika now :D

He's handled Sexton's development quite well so far. I would have liked to see him starting (I'd even like to see him starting when everyone is available), but maybe Chieka is just easing him back in after injury. Hopefully he'll come on at the half or 50 min mark and then start there for the next game.

He's not just going to parachute Sexton who is returning from injury into 10, when we're already missing BOD, D'Arcy and Dempsey in the backline...

Bit of a rant thread this.

    +1

I'm happy with how Sexton has been handled. I think he'll be brought on early second half anyway, but you don't want to stretch the backline too much, already missing big names.

I can't wait for this game tonight!! Let's make it 8 in a row and one step closer to the title with the 2 big games coming up!!

Lovely clearance by Rob Kearney there at the start of the match.

Cheikas 1st and foremost objective has to be to win the ML and not blood players. Its just a simple fact of the pro game.

Im sure even the Leinster heads would be pushng for the 1st piece of silverware under Cheika and Leinsters 1st in a very unproductive last 7 years.

Potentially with 2 or 3 games to go with the current lead we may be able to ease off - if put in the bag.... then we can have best of both worlds.
And dont forget these games may have litle meaning for Leinster if the ML is in the bag but the other teams will have mush to play for so they would still be good tests for blooding.

I would not support blooding anybody back after an injuryu at such a crucrial point..........remeber we lost it from here disasterously the ;ast few years, is Chieks gonna do anythng to risk this occuring again ?

If he did we would be calling for his head for this, silver ware, right here, right now, at this point of time is No1 Priority!!

Lads Sexton showed tonight he was as rusty as hell when he came on, he's been out for 2 months and you don't just throw a player straight back in. If he had have started and made a balls of it his confidence would have dropped, and thats one of the most important things you have to manage in a young player. I'm all for Sexton at 10 and Felipe at 12 but tonight I think the right call was made, he got nearly a half hour of gametime which is fine.

He did have a very VERY nice bit of play to get shaggy in for that last try though.

I was really disapointed tonight,I expected a win anyway but the play was so ragged it was unbelievable.there was no structure to the play everyone was everywhere.fitzgerald got the ball once, showed his class and was for the most part ignored after that.I wish we would properly spread it wide instead of this ragged **** we are playing of late.Horgan obviously doesnt like fitzgerald as he just refuses to pass to him when he an option

Horgan generally doesn't pass anyway, preferring to take the tackle and offload.

Just a reminder, it's Johnno Sexton, not Johnny Sexton (FYI Setanta)

He is just back from an injury. Had Sexton been in full form, Cheika would have more than likely started with him at 10 and Contepomi at 12 (as he has done this season already).
Unannoy yourself. You fail miserably at squad management :p

It doesnt even matter about this game, wait till the next and the next,he wont give him as much as most of us would like.

commentators etc are saying he broke his thumb,I was sitting beside him at the last leinster match and he had a cast on,so i think he broke more than his thumb.

I think you'll find that a broken thumb usually requires a full cast to the elbow for four to six weeks. Beyond that, therapy may be needed to restore full movement and strength, and it can take three months or more to regain full use of the hand, depending on the severity of the injury.

Cheika was absolutely right in his selection, and Sexton got a decent outing after a long injury lay-off. As already mentioned, he did look rusty, but him and Dr Phil did very well for Horgan's second.

Cheika might not be perfect but he was by far the most knowledgeable panelist on TV3's world cup coverage. He seemed a very intelligent, astute man.

That said, his fellow panelists were Jim Glennon and Trevor Brennan. :)
