Metal Gear Solid 4 vs. Grand Theft Auto 4

Since both are flagship games of PS3s 2008 campaign, and posting in the GTA forum would be bias towards MGS fans, I have decided to post here. MGS4 promises to be the last mission for Solid Snake, but, GTA4 promises a world like we've never seen before and both harbour graphics beyond our imagination.

Basically, which side will you choose and which game would you support more?

GTAIV, but I'll be buying that for my 360 instead...
I've preordered MGS4, but aren't even all that fussed about waiting an extra while for the delivery from movietyme
GTAIV on the other hand is going to be a day of release purchase from a bricks & mortar shop, even if it means spending €10-€20 more than it would cost to buy it online...

Not sure why it should come down to picking a "side". The games are not direct competitors and have little in common. The fanbases for each cross over i'm sure but they don't hold any animosity towards each other that I've ever heard of. Both are likely to be excellent games and I would hesitate to skip either. I'll be more inclined to get GTA first but I reckon I'll pick up MGS at some point too.

I never really liked the Metal Gear games, aside from Twin Snakes, so it'll be GTA4 for me.

gta, only good metal gear game was the original PS1 title. the rest are bloated cutscene full rubbish

i think this is very true. However i will still buy both. I have bought the other mgs games in hope of a return to form however im still searching , maybe mgs4 will do it :rolleyes:

I'll probably buy both, or I might not buy MGS4 and keep my money for Battlefield as even though I like the MGS titles, both GTA and Battlefield are higher on my list than MGS4.

I'll get both, but I've always replayed the MGS games more than any other I have so if I absolutely had to buy one or the other I would get MGS4.

i have played all the mgs games for the console, (multiple times completed) None compare to mgs1. Snake eater was ok but lacked 'substance' if you get my drift

yes i have. the ratio of cutscenes to gameplay is about 10:1, its pathetic. Metal gear solid 1 got the balance right, rather than describing when a particular gun was invented when i just want to bloody play on!

MGS4 will have skip-able cutscenes so you're sorted. Anyway I think its obvious from my username, I'm an MGS fan. So I'll be getting this launch day.

Course I'm also a GTA fan so ditto...

PS: MGS1 had some very long cutscenes, stand out being the final 30 minutes in between 2 minute fights!

yeah but they were actually interesting and relevant to the story. even if mgs4 has skipable cut-scenes, id probably still watch them in case i miss something!

Ill buy both. They're the only 2 games im really looking forward to, but if i had to choose just 1, MGS4 for me, im just a big fan of the series

i plan on buying both games but if i was only able to get one it would be MGS4.

I'm in the same boat. Both, but MGS4 is a slightly higher priority for me. It's my main reason for wanting a PS3!

I'm also gonna get both, but if I could only play one, it would be GTA IV. Im not too interested in MGS4 tbh. If it was delayed, i wouldn't care, but if GTA IV was delayed, well I better not talk about what I would do....

big fan of gta i played mgs3 for about an hour hated so wont be buying mgs4 deffo gta4
