Upgrading my dodgy 1MB connection ?

I just about get broadband where I live out in the country.
    Here are my line stats

    Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 928 Kbps 128 Kbps
Noise Margin 7.3 dB 12.0 dB
Line Attenuation 63.0 dB 31.5 dB
Output Power 15.7 dBm 5.6 dBm

The modem was syncing at anything from 500 - 750 kbps, but just recently it's been syncing near the max, and
I've been getting a solid 800kbs+ for the last week or so.

So, thinking of trying a 2MB line. Has anyone tried an upgrade on a line of this quality ? What would I have to look out for ?

I'm with UTV so there's a 30 euro downgrade fee if I try the 2MB line.

Doubt they would even sell you a 2meg package with those stats, very much a borderline 1meg as is.

Yes save your money - you will only be buying trouble and a less dependable connection unfortunately.

    Thanks folks.

Reckon I'll just stay on the 1 Meg and be thankful so.

You might be able to get an improvement if you disconnect everything that can be disconnected from the phone line and just plug the modem directly into the master socket, using a standard 2 metre phone lead.

It looks like you are about 5 miles from the exchange with those stats
, so thats the best you can get at that distance.

You definitely won't be able to upgrade - see this:

    http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/linestats.htm

    for some background info.

What router are you using? My stats are better than yours but my router struggles sometimes.

Sorry to jump in here - very curious - my rates are as follows:

    Margin: 6db (down), 13db(up)
    Line Attentation: 57(down), 31(up)
    Transmit Power: 0(down) 0(up)

Figures seem close - am I in the same boat???!

    Thanks

    D.

Any lower than 6 and it couldn't hold a connection , should be 8 or 10 min margin.

Its should just about do a stable 1mbit . You seem to be about 4 miles from the exchange !

Using a BT Voyager 210 from UTV.

Spongebob, how can you tell how far we are from the exchange ?

Does it not depend on the quality of the phsyical line ?

Well it varies - 4 to 7 (it varies as the page refreshes).

I'm in Inchicore on the Dolphin's Barn exchange... My previous router said 10k+ feet, which is about 2 miles - although it never said what the plus actually was.

... and I'm on a 3mbit package :D ... Have gone thru' all the upgrades since 512. I had a dlink router which crapped out after the 2 - 3mb upgrade (kept dropping and resetting). I replaced it with a Linksys (2+) and its solid. Don't get a full 3mb down - more like 2.6mb down.

Sorry if it was a bit of a leading question - my figures always seem so crap compared to everyone elses.

    D.

From the smell of the Lectric at the back of the modem.

Yep, the figures I have were based on

    a) The smell of the Lectric
    b) What would be expected at the distances I gave

If you are closer with those figures Dazberry there is something very wrong with your line/filters/internal wiring/modem or even with all of them .

I find it had to believe that anyone would sell you a 2mbit, never mind a 3mbit package , at above 50db and a sub 10db margin , its tantamount to fraud that :(

That exchange is precisely Here by the way, how far is it from you ??
