Hey guys..I'm having a problem playing avi/divx files offline.
I can play them fine once connected to Live (mate's house) but as soon as I attempt to play them at home I get the error for download codec needed.
I didn't see anything on the dash update to indicated this was a problem?
I've downloaded it twice but still seeing the same issue.

Have you had your xbox unit replaced, but not your HD? Because if so your live account on your HD is linked to that xbox and will only play offline with it.

ah...damnit..that explains it. Had to replace the elite after 2 days but kept the hard drive for the replacement 360.
So if I create another live account will that work?

Yes, I think so. I've had this problem forever and never brothered fixing (connect 24/7). By creating another account I'd lose all my stats – unless there is a way of migrating the old account

but I could create another live account just for the purpose of playing divx files offline and use my normal live account when for games?

Use a portable USB HD, can be easily moved between xbox's then.

^^ You cant play movies on the xbox off any external USB device, its a pain yeah. I have this same problem, so creating a new account and getting the update I should be able to play off-line then? As I got a new elite but used the HD on the old xbox as I havnt got my migration cable yet.

I'm assuming this is an xbox 360. If so then you definitely can play divx files off an external HD plugged into the front HD, I was watching movies last night off mine.

i presume he is talking about the ones he has rented, no? I woudlnt see why you cant play files offline unless they had been rented from xbox live. I could be very wrong, but mine plays my own movies offline.

its something to do with the content on a transferred HDD, you have to be connected to live to use downloaded game content and arcade games ect....

Wait, you can play DivX AVI's on the xbox, cool. When did that start? (sorry for being a bit behind in the game here)

Since the latest dashboard update, last Nov I think. If you have MCE you can share your files etc. If you have just Xp etc then share the folder through Media player, then you can access your files from your xbox.
