Transfer Civil Service

    Hello :)

I am working at the moment in the Dept of Justice in Dublin as a CO.

I do however need to move out West - Galway or Sligo perhaps for a couple of reasons.

The thing is I am not long in the Civil Service (a few weeks) and wonder how I would go about this..

I know there is a magazine (Aontas) where you can apply for transfers but is it only when you have been made permanent - I am obviously still on my 1 year probation.

I'm sure someone said anyone can apply but I don't want to ask HR as yet..

Also would you say there would be people who would be willing to transfer up to Dublin or is it unlikely....

    Thanks all...

see if there is a way to decentralise there.

call publicjobs.ie and see what they say. there maybe a vacancy over there.

    Thanks Slydice :)

I had a look on the site publicjobs.ie and there doesn't seem to be any Galway Jobs, although I guess these could be available internally.

However, when I went for the test and interview etc, the role was for Permanant Civil Service Dublin Based.

Would I be tied to this for at least 2 years? This was what was in m contract I believe.

I know I could leave and look for a job in Galway but I would prefer to keep my position in the Civil Service

Anyone else any ideas? I have looked in the last issue of Aontas (Jan/Feb) and a few before but nobody ever seems to be looking for a transfer to Dublin..

I think the contracts ususally say something like "You must spend two years in Dublin before being eligible for decentralisation" and if the position was advertised as "Dublin based" rather than "Country-wide" you might be stuck - especially since you still have your probation to work out. I suspect even if you found someone from Galway/Sligo to do a swap you wouldn't be able to take it up without breaking the terms of your contract.

I wouldn't be afraid of talking to HR though - you could just phrase it along the lines of "In the medium term I am looking at moving down the country for family reasons etc. and know that there are transfer lists... I realise I might not be eligible to move now but I'd love to put my name on the list now if I could so when I am eligible I won't be waiting for ages..." They might tell you you can't put your name down etc. but it will give you an opportunity to ask questions without making them think you are going to jump ship!

I think your best bet would be to have a chat with the union as they are heavily involved with decentralisation negotiations etc. (Even if you're not a member there could be a rep in your section, although maybe you don't want to let them know!!)

Your other option is maybe to look out for other open CO competitions that are exclusively based in the west/north west (i.e. not internal transfers). If you got offered a job that way I think it would work out as it would be a new contract and you could "resign" from the Dublin position... Civil Service recruitment takes ages though so it could be six of one and half a dozen of the other.

    Best of luck though!

I think the pensions office is the main one in Sligo. They might be willing to transfer you if you have a really good personal reason but if its just a case that you would prefer live in sligo/galway I would say you are SOL

Talk to the HR people in your place. I know someone (friend of a friend) who got a transfer by arranging it with someone else themselves, by looking at where they planned to go, and seeing if someone there wanted out.

Ask to be transferred to a dole office somewhere in the West.
They get very few requests for that from Civil Servants so you might get placed quickly.

there is usually a transfer list in the department you want to transfer to. give them a ring tuesday and find out can you put your name on the transfer list now or do you have to wait the two years.

you could advertise in the aontas magazine but check if you have to be a member of cpsu first

there is a information on decentralisation on the publicjobs website
