7dayshop have a new "deal" on the Canon 17-55 2.8 for ~€800 including Uk Vat. Seems like a good deal to me as komplett and pixmania have it at over €200 more. I know I can get one in the U.S. @ B&H for ~€640 but am not planning on travellling there anytime zoon.

Do people recommend 7dayshop? I presume Canon Ireland would handle warranty (its vat paid).

    thanks

I've been buying from them since 2001 or so. Only one or two slight problems - and I've bought LOADS of stuff!:D But watch for import duty on something of that value. The Channel Islands are recognised as being import duty free in the UK - but I don't know about the rest of the EU.:)

This guy's very good as well. Excellent prices and prompt delivery. he may be able to source the lens for you.

You said it. Perfect length for my 40D. Has anyone ever got stung for duty from 7dayshop?

bought my 40d from them last year. no duty, but the camera went missing in the post for two weeks and 7dayshop had ZERO interest in helping me track it down (kept giving me incorrect tracking numbers, no response to emails, refusal to give out phone number etc). I know it's the carriers responsibility, but 7dayshop basically told me to go away and claim against my credit card if it didn't turn up in a month!

To be fair, I have used them a lot over the last 4-5 years and never had a problem before. Based on my experience of their "customer service" i've decided to shop elsewhere.

That's interesting about the duty. I held off on ordering a 450D with them because of it. Couldn't get a straight answer anywhere. That solves it!:)

I've a 40D on the way from them - I assumed since they describe themselves as "7dayshop.com was launched in early 2000, and continues to establish itself as the UK's largest Internet supplier to the photographic enthusiast market. " - that they would be considered part of the UK and as such there would be no duty to Ireland.

Is the channel islands not part of the UK and therefore the EU?

The one thing I was wary about was the fact they used more or less regular post - I would have rathered a more expensive but fully tracked and quicker service such as DHL - at least as an option

It's confusing alright. And the revenue.ie site only confuses things further.

The Channel Islands may be considered part of the UK, but they are NOT part of the EU, so you would be liable for VAT. Just something to be aware of.

Details from the Jersey Govt website.

You may or may not be caught for VAT though when importing. All depends on the shipping and customs.

The lens is vat paid so there is no problem with Vat. The discussion was around duty and whether shipments from the Channel Islands would be liable for duty here.

I stand corrected if wrong, but is our VAT rate 21.5% and the UK one 17.5%? Just to be aware of the differential if it's taken into account.:)

I thought our VAT rate was 21%, I know it's 13.5% on services

I used to buy a lot of memory cards at one time, all came individually. I remember one day my mailbox was filled with 21 small envolopes. Same thing happened with MX2 (another UK site).

I still don't understand why. Maybe something to do with VAT.

Theres something on their site about that - mentions if some items are on backorder it doesnt hold up the whole order - still 21 seems silly although its prob just the system they have in place

    Thanks Trish.

I was just wondering if the difference between the UK rate and ours would be added to the charge if he was caught for import taxes.:)

This is common since the individual price for the objects would not qualify for duty, while the combined total probably would.

Just something to be aware of, when ordering from the Channel Islands. Companies like Play.com would be similar.

Well I ordered from 7dayshop last thursday and guess what. The postman arrived today (monday) with nice new toy for me to play with. Not bad service from 7dayshop as they only shipped on Friday.

My lens lineup is complete (at least for this month!).

Now I'll have to get out and take some shots.
