Films without sound-need ideas

    I need your help.

My friend is having his 30th tomorrow, and he is doing a house party. During the party, he wants to show films without sound in the background. Basically he has a projector, and he wants to use one of the walls as a screen.
So we are kind of thinking hard, what films would be suitable, ie which films would look good without sound, be a conversation topic, but without taking over the party. Here is few ideas we had so far:

Ghostbusters, Pulp Fiction, ET, Close encounters of the 3rd Kind, The Goonies, Back to the Future, Beetlejuice - thats to get a bit of a nostalgia going.

Lost in Translation, Batman, Kill Bill vol1, Apocalypto, Big Fish, Matrix - for the cinematics,

Mask, Dumb& Dumber - guilty pleasures shared by a lot of people.

We have few more, but you get the picture, the films are supposed to be in a background, not to take over the party, but be interesting enough for people to have a look at them once in a while.

    Do you have any ideas?

Laurel and Hardy: short slap-stick comidies, but not engrossing.

Yeah, we were thinking about it, and it would be good idea, but he decided against it for one reason - it's black&white. He puts a lot of effort in this party, it's kind of themed, and b&w won't really go with it.

Sin City - its better without the sound and just looks great.
    300 - for the ladies ;)

Sin City - Love it, great idea.
300 would look too, i just really don't like this film. I'll add it to the list though, we need something for the ladies, and I'd rather have that than Pretty Woman

Baraka might be worth a shot...

How about some anime like Akira?
Or perhaps something visually stunning like Appleseed, or totally off the wall like Paprika....

Was in a club years ago and the had Mad Max on a projecter... it worked surprisingly well

Baraka +1. Visually amazing and unusual and doesnt have much sound to it anyway.

You could also stick on the 'Planet Earth' boxset if you have it. Amazing to look at.

Ha, never thought of that, you are right though. It is kinda of different b&W though, and it has some colur in it. You are right though.

Collateral, I'm not sure if it would work. It's a cool film al right, but a lot of it is two lads talking. Other parts are great though.

I was actually thinking about Heat for a while.

2001: A Space Odyssey in memory of Arthur C. Clarke.

    Very visual movie.

Other Kubricks would also be neat.

The Shining could work too, as would Clorkwork Orange

Not mad about Anime TBH, and we ruled cartoons out.

You are on to something here though, as the birthday boy lived in Japan for 3 years. Don't know Appleseed or Paprika, will look it up.

Mad Max definitely, we have it on the list

Love the idea of Planet Earth, never thought of that.

That's the problem though, we have to be able to get the films today, and we don't want to be buying stuff - renting a projector costs 150 Euro for one night. So that leaves our private collections + xtra vision. So that pretty much rules out anything too exotic.

I was gonna say Commando, but some of the best bits are the lines.

Though it might appeal for some people to shout out the appropiate line during the film as drink is added.

One of the Alien films is always good for visuals.

    yellow submarine

Not so sure if it will work without the music. Plus, it's a drug free party.

EDIT - by the way, sorry guys for not using multiquote, completely forgot about it, will do it from now on.

And thanks for participating in this little brain storm, like your ideas, keep them coming.

Don't think COmmando would work either, to be honest.

    I like Alien though.

    The Qatsi trilogy perhaps? http://www.koyaanisqatsi.org/
Terrific visuals (great music too, but that doesn't concern us right now ;)). Basically montages of cool imagery. Would be really hypnotic in the background.

But yeah, anything visually impressive: +1 Paprika, Akira 2001 etc.. Also consider stuff like the Fountain, Curse of the Golden Flower (just watched it last night - astonishing visuals, and you aren't missing much without the story).

    B&W ftw!

    Night of the Demon?

Its going to need to be something visually eye catching.

Paprika would certainly be incredible, very good film.

For me, I'd say some martial arts film, like Ong Bak and the like, just lots of non-stop ass-kicking.

Nosferatu, Dracula, Frankenstein (Orignal Universal versions), Souther Comfort, Apocalypse Now, Road House, Red Dawn and Robocop are all great for parties.

Laser on Georges street in Dublin would have Baraka & Planet Earth to rent...along with pretty much everything else mentioned in this thread.

Baraka would be perfect though as its all about the visuals.

You gotta do an Airplane/Naked Gun-fest. these movies are some of the most visually slapstick ever made. Most of the humour actually takes oplace in the background -fantastic.

scarface!! goes perfect alongside pulp fiction as everyone knows the lines so doesnt NEED to hear them!

(and it is only €8 in xtravision now, or €4 if you rent or buy american gangster)
