Easter Update

    Hello there,

As a follow up to our update earlier this month, here is a further update on matters relating to nightclub closing times in Ireland.

As it stands, the Government appointed Alcohol Advisory Group are due to make their report on March 31st. We know that a lot of their main recommendations will relate to the sale of alcohol in off licences, supermarkets and so on; but we believe that they will also recommend for the closing times of nightclubs (operating under special exemption orders) to be brought back by half an hour. So-called ‘loopholes’ in the law also mean that clubs with theatre licences and bars operating as early houses may be affected too.

Our primary concern is nightclubs, and following a very positive meeting with The Green Party’s Ciarán Cuffe, we do feel that we have at least one in-tune politician on our side; let’s hope he can help make some sort of difference. We do need more widespread opposition to the curbing of nightclub times though, so it is imperative that more politicians start to take an active interest in the matters at hand. Many people ask us how they can help the campaign, so here is your chance!

We would like anyone with any interest in liberalising the licensing laws, or who would like to stop the backward steps that the Government may choose to take, to contact your local TD(s) to inform them of your concerns and ideas. We recommend making an appointment at their local evening clinic(s) or to at least speak in person with your local representative. Not all TDs will be too up to date with the issues of nightclub closing times or systems like staggered/sequential closing, so they will need to be filled in; especially as this will soon be a topic of the discussion in The Dáil, as well as already being a subject of more current public debate.

We also recommend for you to contact Minister Brian Lenihan at the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, preferably by post. Their address is 94, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2. Alternatively he can be emailed at minister@justice.ie .

With the subject of nightclubs and alcohol abuse Ireland being more in the news over the last few weeks, we also found ourselves gaining more nationwide coverage, most notably in the following:
