    Hi,

I am in my final year in engineering and have been in contact with a few companies about getting a role in a company for when i graduate. One company has invited me to an interview in their London offices next week as they have me shortlisted.

I have emailed them back saying I am available but I am wondering do I have to pay for flights, accomm, etc or will the company pay for it??

Advice on this would be great!

I would say that unless specifically mentioned, then you pay yourself.

What company is it and in what industry? But as mentioned earlier unless they say they will pay then its you who will pay. They might put you up over night though.

I dont know if i am allowed name names but its a very large multinational company who have offices all over the world. They are an engineering company and are involved in a wide variety of disciplines within engineering.

    They said in the email

"Please get back to us in the coming weeks so as we can make the necessary arrangements."

That made me think that they may be paying. They are a big company which helps. I am a student and money is low coming to the end of the year. Could always hit up the parents for a few quid but prefer not to.

Anytime I've applied for a job that's local but the interview is not the
company has paid my travel expenses. This is common amongst multinational
    corporations.

They'll either make the travel arrangements for you or reimburse you
    - make sure to keep any plane/train tickets and receipts.

Ask the HR person or recruiter, don't be afraid to ask what the procedure is.

Best of luck with the interview.

I would just ask so I dont think they would mind.

The company have an office in Dublin but they've invited me to the London office so I am not going to be suggesting doing it in the Dublin office.

They said in the email that they will make the neccessary arrangement which is promising. I am hoping they send me over because it would save me some cash.

Cheers for the luck, suprised i am shortlisted since they have never talked to me before. i did work hard on my CV so I presume it is doing its job :D

if it is for a job in dublin that you have applied for but the interview is being held in the UK then they will most likely be paying for it.

but if you were applying for a position with a comapny in the UK, then it wold be up to you to pay for your own travel.

if you feel feel awkward asking if they are paying for it or not, then email them and say you are eager to get over to meet them and would they like to make the travel arrangements or should you make them yourself. dont mention the cost at all initially. if they say they will make arrangements then you can take it that they are paying. if they say it is up to you to make your own arrangments then you can take it that you paying.

That could also mean, "get back to us so we can organise dates/times for interview." Don't assume anything here, just ask. I'm sure you won't be the first or last person to ask what the story is with travel expenses.

Speculate to accumulate and all that.

    Good luck with it.

I applied to the company online in January after talking to their recruiter at a graduation fair in November in Dublin.

They may get back to me tomorrow so I will put out the feelers as tp whether they are paying.

well then, just say something simple like, do you guys have a certian airline that candidates fly over with and hotel that they stay? they he should give you the low down of what usually happens.

personally i think you should be covereed.

good luck ith it anyway and let us know how you get on

i'd guess that they will cover the expenses.

I got expenses when i came over to the UK for an interview, and these expenses were offered to all applicants. It was fairly standard in all jobs i applied for.

bear in mind, that this company knows you are still a student. they know that a lot of good student applicants would not be able to attend an interview, even from the UK, if expenses were not covered.

also, its a big company, they'll have thought about this.

    good luck with the interview

I went over to two graduate role interviews in the UK last year while I was a student. They paid the hotel for me, I had to pay for the flight, train ticket, etc, but then I submitted a claim and got it all back.

I would expect this is the case for you but check just in case.

Generally big companies have a decent attitude towards expenses. I would expect to have travel & accomodation covered if travelling for an interview.

I actually refused to attend an interview where they wouldn't cover expenses. My attitude was that if they're going to be niggardly about expenses before they hire you, what are they going to be like when you're working for them?

    Cheers guys for the replies

I put the feelers out there and turns out that they wont be covering costs to get over there. I just asked if they could reommended an airport to fly to and that got me my answer. Was answered that a previous candidate flew from Dublin with Ryanair.

I dont mind because i looked at my application again and turns out that i didnt apply directly to their London office. Was a good few months ago so forgot. Anyways got the interview on the 7th.

    Cheers for the info

If you do get the post, make sure to ask what sort of relocation payment they might offer you!
Might be cheeky for a move to london as a Grad, but you never know!

The company who I contract for in Munich gave me €150 towards the flight when I went for an interview there. I flew over and back in one day so accommodation wasn't and issue.

Turns out they are reimbursing the travel expenses so not too bad. Its a two hour interview tomorrow in London. flying out in the morning.

Dundhoone - there is a signing bonus which is good if i get the post

    How did you get on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,502 ✭✭✭chris85

Very well the interview was just under 2hours long and then met some of the team in there which was good. Was tiring at the end but went very well i think.

They offer a signing bonus and a bous after 3months to pay off any student debts. They explained all the benefits i would get which was good. Very relaxed interview but long.

They reimbursed me there and then in cash for my travel which i was suprised with. was thinking they might say theyd send out a cheque but would never happen
