Wireless N Streaming Questions

I have a 2.4Ghz MBP, a Linksys Wag300n router and an apple TV. I've been syncing some new movies to my Apple TV but they seem to be taking forever. With my previous MBP (2.33ghz model) i had to buy a wireless N enabler and i remember the speeds being somewhat better.

Is there a way to check what speed th data transfer is happening at? I don;t hink i need to buy the enabler for this machine do i? Even when i switch to streaming it doesn't seem to manage enough speed to maintain the stream. This didn't happen with my last machine.

open network utility.....it should tell you what speed you connection is at.

make sure you've got the latest software updates - a specific airport update went out over the last few days

The n standard is also not yet complete, so various companies are using differing draft version of it. As such, your apple macbook may not be compatible with your linksys router.

Maybe, but my previous MBP seemed much quicker.

when i opened network utility it showed transfer of (i think) 130 Mbps Is that about the norm? Does that mean its the maximum setting and that i am probably getting less than that?

I have seen in the Airport Extreme that a specific amount of bandwidth can be assigned to multicast traffic.

Now I can't say that this 100% applies to your case but I know alot of streams use multicast as a way for many clients to pick up on a single output from the stream. Live streams definitely use it.

On the Airport extreme running at 2.4GHz I can only give it 11Mbps but on 5Ghz full N mode I can give it 24 or 54 or so. But alot more anyway. I've no experience of other N routers but maybe they have a similar setting too. Worth a look.

Ok so i have a small update. Couldn't get this figured out so i tried pluggin the laptop into the router with Ethernet and the wireless connection to apple tv was much faster. So i have 2 questions. Could it be that this is just so slow because my MBP is communicating with apple tv through the router, not directly? and could it be that there is a slowdown due to some setting on my laptop? as that seems to be where the problem for streaming is coming from.
