Do I need I.D ( ie address / passport and such)to buy an Airsoft bb gun? or can I just go into a shop and buy one whenever I want?

If you are buying from a reputable dealer you do.

Any IAA affiliated retailer and a number of others will not sell to you unless you can prove you are over 18 (or over sixteen with a parent or guardian s permission).

Airsofts are not called "bb" guns. just airsoft guns, bb gun is a different thing

gun is okay as far as i know, you can have a glue gun like the fact its called

a gun doesnt mean its offensive so i think its kosher , weapon DEFINATELY

A 4 year old can go into a shop and buy an airsoft gun....legally speaking of course. They are classed as toys. Most people would like more restrictions on their sale, and the IAA affiliated retailers in Ireland do adhere to certain rules...i.e. self regulation.

As mentioned above, bb guns are a different matter entirely and are firearms (since they are capable of an energy output far in excess of 1 joule). So for a bb gun, you do need a licence.

You should also wear eye protection. You should also not display or use an airsoft gun on public property as it is criminal to do so if you scare someone. Ideally, you should only use airsoft guns on an airsoft skirmish site. It's not the law, but it's good practice & common sense.

Thanks for all the replies . I'm 22 but look about 27 so I'm sure I wouldnt have a problem . The reason I asked was because I was talking to a guy I know who ( according to himself ) knows everything about everything, and he was trying to tell me that you need a passport and proof of address to buy a airsoft gun. He was also trying to tell me that they could be converted into a REAL gun and I would need a licence to buy one. He got furius when I refused to believe him. Needless to say this guy is a complete B*llsh*t artist and I cant wait to video myself buying my first airsoft rifle without I.D and shutting him up once and for all ,

Is this a good first gun ?

He was probably confusing airsoft guns with airguns or bb guns. You do need a licence for them (hence the proof of id), and they are already considered 'real guns'. Direct him to these forums so that he can learn the facts before he scares anyone else with his gibberish.

As for the Steyr AUG A1 Military, it's very popular and is a good AEG. Not my cup of tea, but you can't go wrong with this AEG. Don't forgot some extra mags (at least one) and an extra battery.

What gun would you recommend ? I was thinking maybe a sniper instead.
or perhaps a cheaper sniper and a cheaper assault rifle,
all I have is 500 at most , and thats for everything including gun's masks/any other protective wear and ammo/batteries.

500 is plenty for gear. being a sniper is not for everyone, maybe buy a good

assault rifle, then maybe buy a cheap sniper and see if you like sniping.

Just remember, you can snipe with an AEG, but you can't do CQB with a sniper rifle.
