Gay adoption (never mind the marriage part!)

I'm aware that gay marriage/civil partnership isn't even available in Ireland yet but I was wondering what people thought of gay adoption? Should it be legalised? Will there be any potential problems in legalising it (from a legal viewpoint?)

Specifically any reactions to the Dunne J. judgment from Zappone & Gilligan v. Revenue Commissioners where she questioned whether the facts on gay adoption have been verified to a high enough standard to satisfy her.

Revising for exams does throw up some interesting questions (don't worry I won't be using this for the exam - it's just a side issue from gay marriage that interested me).

In all adoption matters the rights of the child are paramount, and since the Irish system of rights is based on the family of a husband, wife and child, gay couples are at a serious disadavantage. I think that if there were a chronic shortage of adoptive parents then gay couples should be preferred over orphanages.

It think as a side issue, the Cathal O'Searchaigh debacle will certainly put gay men out of the picture for the next few years as adoptive parents.
